Go! Go! Mister Chickums: Arcade Energy With A Fresh Idea
I’ve always had a soft spot for arcade-style games. The kind you can pick up, play for a few minutes, chase a high score, and then jump back in later for “just one more go.” It’s a style of game that never really gets old when it’s done well.
Go! Go! Mister Chickums taps into that classic arcade spirit beautifully. It clearly takes inspiration from the single-screen platformers many of us grew up with, but it also brings its own ideas to the table instead of simply copying something from the past.
That’s something I appreciated right away. Many retro-inspired titles try to recreate something that already exists, while this one feels like it’s building its own little arcade identity. And I had a great time with it.

A Simple Story That Gets The Job Done
Our hero, Mister Chickums, seems to be enjoying a peaceful moment at home when a mischievous villain named Grabbo appears and steals all of his eggs. Naturally, that’s not going to stand. So Mister Chickums heads out to retrieve his stolen eggs and give the culprit a well-earned telling off.
That’s really all the story you need. Arcade games thrive on simple setups, and this one sticks to that tradition. There’s a bad guy, some stolen eggs, and a determined chicken ready to put things right.
Classic Single-Screen Platforming
The core gameplay takes place across single-screen levels spread across several themed worlds. Each stage has the same main goal: collect the eggs scattered around the level and toss them into the nest before the timer runs out. Sounds easy enough, but the levels are packed with enemies and obstacles trying to get in your way.
Your moveset is easy to understand. You can run, jump, and defeat enemies by bouncing on their heads, as long as they don’t have spikes, of course.
Enemies also respawn fairly quickly, which keeps you moving and stops the levels from ever feeling too quiet. Thankfully, the game gives you a little warning symbol before they reappear, which helps avoid some of those frustrating surprise hits that older arcade games were sometimes guilty of.

The Egg Tossing Mechanic
The real standout feature is how the eggs themselves work. When Mister Chickums picks up an egg, it slows him down slightly, which immediately adds a bit of tension to your movement. Suddenly, those jumps need a little more thought, and dodging enemies becomes a bit trickier.
The eggs can then be thrown, and that’s where things get interesting. Once thrown, the egg only stays active for a short time. If you don’t catch it again or land it safely in the nest before the timer expires, it breaks and returns to its original position.
This mechanic leads to some surprisingly fun moments. You can throw eggs across platforms, bounce them around obstacles, or attempt satisfying long-distance shots straight into the nest.
Pulling off one of those trick shots feels great. It’s one of those little fist-pump arcade moments where you just sit back and think, “Yes, that worked!” You can also use thrown eggs to defeat enemies, which adds another layer to the gameplay and gives you more options when navigating tricky sections.

Score Chasing
Like any good arcade game, Go! Go! Mister Chickums encourages players to chase high scores. Once all eggs are safely delivered, any remaining time is converted into a bonus round where enemies disappear and the screen fills with gems and rewards. It’s a nice little burst of points before moving on to the next stage.
The game also mixes things up with different level themes and enemy types as you progress. Some areas introduce slippery surfaces, while others throw in more complicated layouts that require careful planning. There are also power-ups, bonus stages, and a few secrets hidden throughout the game for players who enjoy discovering extra treats along the way.
And if you ever get stuck or simply want company, there’s also a couch co-op option where a friend can jump in and help.

Bright Visuals And A Cheerful Soundtrack
Visually, the game does a great job capturing that arcade atmosphere. The pixel art is colourful and expressive, with lively environments and plenty of detail in the characters and enemies. It feels like a modern take on classic arcade visuals rather than a strict imitation of older hardware.
Mister Chickums himself has an appealing, laid-back personality, and the enemies are fun to look at as well. The upbeat soundtrack also fits nicely with the game’s playful tone. It’s the sort of music that keeps the pace lively without ever becoming distracting.
A Small Boss Fight Issue
If there’s one area where the game didn’t fully land for me, it’s the boss fights. At the end of each world, you’ll face the egg-stealing villain in a boss encounter. The idea is good, but the fights themselves feel a little too simple compared to the regular stages.
Most bosses only require a few hits to defeat, which makes them surprisingly easy after the challenge of the levels leading up to them. They’re not bad, but they don’t quite deliver the same sense of accomplishment that the main stages do.

Conclusion: Chicken Run
Go! Go! Mister Chickums is a delightful arcade platformer that understands exactly what makes this style of game enjoyable. The egg-throwing mechanic is clever, the levels are quick and satisfying to play, and the whole experience captures that addictive “just one more go” feeling that great arcade games thrive on.
It’s easy to jump into for a few minutes, but it’s also the sort of game you can happily sit with for longer sessions while chasing better scores and discovering its secrets. The boss fights might be a little too gentle, but the core gameplay is strong enough that it barely takes away from the overall experience.
If you enjoy arcade platformers, retro-inspired games, or simply want something fun to dip into between longer gaming sessions, Go! Go! Mister Chickums is well worth checking out.
