Industry Giant 4.0 is a revival of the well-loved economic simulation series Industry Giant, which publishers Toplitz released 22 years ago. The game aims to bring players back to the thrill of building an industrial empire from scratch.
I was offered the chance to play an extended demo of Industry Giant 4.0, and of course, I said yes. The demo offers a glimpse into the complex production, logistics, and financial management mechanics that have defined the series since its beginning. Here are my first impressions.
Industry Giant 4.0

The Industry Giant 4.0 demo begins in the 1950s and spans into the present day, immersing you in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. You choose your difficulty settings, and there is one scenario to play through in the demo.
The game emphasises the progression of automation and digitisation that marks the Industry 4.0 movement. It challenges you to engage in strategic decision-making across the entire production chain, from stone and wood to food and more. With 25 different industries to manage, from farms to manufacturing, and approximately 60 goods to produce and transport, the scope of the full game is going to be vast.
Production and Logistics

The Industry Giant 4.0 demo allows you to define your company’s approach from the start. These choices affect not only the gameplay but also the events, policies, and marketing strategies that unfold later. You set up production lines and transport routes from producer to store and finally to consumers.
Furthermore, the game’s economic mechanics are influenced by real-world events and seasonal changes, keeping you on your toes. It requires you to balance production and logistics while adapting to shifting demands and technological advancements.

For example, if you have two product lines, wood and fresh fruit, you have built and managed a supply route to transport both raw goods from your sawmills and fruit farms back to the city and into the stores where people will purchase them.
However, the demand for firewood during spring and summer isn’t going to be particularly high when the weather is nice and warm. Additionally, you are not going to harvest much fruit in the colder months when it’s winter, and snow is on the ground, halting its growth. So, in Industry Giant 4.0, you can actually set the number of trucks in operation along your supply route and change their shift patterns based on the season.
Charts and Transportation

If you enjoy analysing tables, charts, and production chains, Industry Giant 4.0 will feel like home. The demo gives us a glimpse of how the game, when released, will go beyond city-building and demand careful planning and monitoring of every step in your production process.
Do you overproduce to cut costs per unit or scale back to avoid expensive storage fees? This balancing act sets the gameplay apart from more traditional economic sims where “more is always better.” Here, overproduction can bankrupt you just as easily as underproduction.
The transport mechanics are detailed, with trucks, trains, and ships available for moving goods between production hubs and markets. The game encourages creating complex transport routes, but this system, while ambitious, shows some rough edges.
Challenges in the Interface

While the demo for Industry Giant 4.0 shows plenty of potential, reading the UI poses a challenge for those of us who don’t have perfect eyesight. Some of the text is small, making it hard to read, so I hope that when the game is released, the UI can be enlarged in the settings.
The financial overview is well-designed and easy to follow, but the same can’t be said for the transport management system. Also, I found that setting up routes and tweaking production chains involves many clicks, which can lead to frustration when handling a large, complex network of factories and distribution centres. Hopefully, these interface issues will be smoothed out before the final release, as they currently interfere with the otherwise promising gameplay.
Final Thoughts

The demo for Industry Giant 4.0 highlights a game aimed at dedicated fans of production optimisation and business management simulations, especially those of us with fond memories of the earlier titles. For players who thrive on building efficient, sprawling industrial empires while juggling logistics and financial management, Industry Giant 4.0, when released, may offer a promising return to form.
Developed by Don Vs Dodo and published by Toplitz Productions, the Industry Giant 4.0 demo is available to play during Steam Next Fest 2024; take it for a run, and if you like the demo, don’t forget to Wishlist the game!
