Dragon Thief

LootLite is a top-down arcade experience with a roguelike flavour to it. It’s another roguelike game that follows a familiar formula of randomly generated levels and drops to buff your skill. Getting through unscathed will likely take you multiple runs and grinding away learning the enemy patterns while getting lucky by finding better weapons. LootLite keeps its formula simple and to the point but it works. If you’re looking for a quick and satisfying gaming fix for a cheap price point then this will satisfy the arcade itch. Also, it has co-op!

A dragon has taken your stuff and you need to get it back. That is the short and snappy premise you are greeted with summarizing all you need to know about this fantasy setting in one witty loading screen. Then you’re dumped into a grassy level where you get to create your character from a small option of cosmetics. The overall goal of each level is to destroy a set amount of enemies which will eventually unlock the exit to proceed forward. But if you linger about looking for additional items, like keys or gems, you can unlock additional exits making runs much less linear.

Maybe one run you decide to descend into the dungeon, maybe the next you try the forest? Each level is short and snappy making this a very appealing pick-up and play experience if you’re a busy gamer, you might even be able to get run-in while you wait for that tasty roast dinner to cook.

Twin Stick Controls

The game plays as a twin-stick shooter with controls being simple to pick up and play for most audiences. On PC both controller and mouse and keyboard controls are available. You can attack enemies with your weapon which can be melee or range based. Other abilities at your disposal is an ability which you can activate at the cost of some mana. Over time you can charge up a special move which I found best used when you’re in a pinch.

Chests are scattered round levels allowing you to swap out weapons with a small screen to indicate the weapons stats to see if they are more useful for the situation you are currently in. A chest may also contain runes which will offer stat buffs to your character at the cost of gold collected along your journey. You can choose a class to play such as warrior or mage where your stats will slightly differ from health to starting weapons and special ability.

Pixel Bottoms

As you play through the game run after run and fail in your attempt to get your junk back from the dragon you’ll unlock more cosmetics outfits and character classes. I kinda loved the default outfit of your character as they appear to be running around in the pixelated nude attacking monsters. This is probably a first for the genre for me and a clear determination of how much your character wants their stuff back.

If you have a loved one nearby why not grab them and enjoy the game together. Only local co-op features but it’s most certainly a welcome feature likely appealing to many looking for a cheap affordable co-op experience. That’s kinda LootLite in a nutshell. Pixel graphics are fine, the soundtrack is okay, and it does a lot of box ticking off the checklist for a decent game but didn’t leave a lasting impression on me walking away… well with the exception of pixel bottoms.

A Lite Coffee Game

LootLite is another example of a roguelike that’s perfectly fine and entertaining but doesn’t tread much ground from what’s come before. It’s an example of a coffee game except this one has roguelike sprinkles and a dash of vanilla syrup in its mixture. It will satisfy you for a short period of time in short gaming bursts but it probably won’t leave a lasting impression. Still, it’s rare to have a coffee game featuring co-op which is always a plus in my book. While I reviewed the PC version of this game I can see this being very appealing on Switch unless, of course, you are lucky enough to get your hand on a Steam deck.
