Ahro

A serene, meditative scene from Ahro, featuring a character seated cross-legged at the base of a stone staircase amidst lush green surroundings. The bold purple title "AHRO" dominates the upper portion of the image, while mystical symbols, including an hourglass and a bell, float in the air. The forested background gives an air of tranquility and mystery. Published on: LadiesGamers.

Release your spirit and fly through mystic landscapes as you search for a cure for the darkness. Ahro is an explorative, lore-rich, side-scrolling adventure.

Find out why Ahro won James’ Deep and Meaningful Award 2024.

For me, Ahro resonates deeply. Perhaps that’s because of my personal connection to mental health, but I feel the developer accomplished exactly what they set out to do on what seems to be a modest budget. The gameplay won’t be for everyone; some will see it as repetitive and tedious. But if you take a step back, you may see more of the experience. Ahro is a game about facing the darkness head-on and finding a way to move forward, and it’s an experience that, for those willing to embrace its quiet beauty, can be profoundly moving.

BROK the InvestiGator

LadiesGamers BROK

In a futuristic “light cyberpunk” world where animals have replaced humans, privileged citizens live under a protective dome from the ambient air pollution while others struggle to make a living on the outside

BROK the Investigator won James’ Best Hidden Gem 2023:

I didn’t think the combination of point-and-click and brawler gameplay would work, but BROK the InvestiGator smashed all my cautious expectations. Also, it is a refreshingly original game that provides flexibility to the player, whether you want to enjoy it casually or prefer a more challenging experience.

I myself have become a bit tired of the point-and-click genre, but BROK changed my mind. This is thanks to the creativity and multiple ways to tackle the game’s puzzles. This is probably one of the few games in this genre I see myself easily returning to again. BROK is brilliant overall and easily a contender for Game of the Year. Do not miss this one.

Immerse yourself in a unique narrative experience, embarking on a vibrant journey that will awaken your senses and evoke warm memories.

Mina enjoyed her holiday in Dordogne

Dordogne is as close to perfect as a game can be. There is a little jank, and a little weirdness in the UI, but the beauty and depth of the game make that absolutely forgivable.

I don’t think I will be playing Dordogne again any time soon; I think I need to recover emotionally from the story. But I do want to try it again from the beginning and see what other hidden wonders might be around the corners of Dordogne.

A Boundless Adventure in a Treasure-Hunter’s Paradise

Paula struck gold when she reviewed Dragon Quest Treasures, and also made a guide to help you:

The world of Draconia’s floating islands is a beautiful setting for an open-ended adventure. An adventure where hunting for treasure and monsters can become equally addictive.
Dragon Quest Treasures is an absolute delight to play, where you can take your time and discover all corners of Draconia without pressure. There is an amazing amount of quests to complete, accompanied by a recognisable cast of lovable characters. Hunting for shiny, sparking treasure is such fun and full of surprises.

Dragon Quest Treasures Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes the DLC, is also on sale at half price.  Try before you buy – check out the demo.

Hokko Life

Promotional artwork for Hokko Life with the main character sitting on a bench. Published on LadiesGamers

Hokko Life is a cosy, creativity-filled community sim game.

Yvonne fell asleep on the train and started a Hokko Life

Hokko Life doesn’t deny where it found its origins, mainly in being inspired by Animal Crossing. Being a small development studio Wonderscope clearly shows this for the passion project it is, and one that the fans of the genre will love. As I couldn’t help but compare, some niggles do pop up and I found that the game is awfully slow in really getting interesting.

Once Hokko Life gets underway there’s more to do, and there are some things in Hokko Life that go quite a bit deeper than you would expect. Custom designing is really hands-on. I found it a bit fiddly on the Switch, but I saw projects up on Steam that really inspired me. It’s fun to see how they re-invented bits of the well-known gameplay, and I think this could be a real time sink!

There are some great tips in our guide.

Go above and beyond the cosmos!

Paula launched into reviewing My Little Universe

I’ve had a blast with My Little Universe; it is a cosy worldbuilding collect-a-thon. It urges the player to explore further and discover what is on the next hex. My Little Universe is a wholesome, relaxing game for those who want the thrill of exploring and collecting infinite resources. Suitable for all ages in the family, it also has a very addictive gameplay loop and watching Orangey go to work and swing his tools is brilliant; I wish I had his energy!

Nobody Saves the World

Change forms, combine abilities, save the world!

James saved the world in Nobody Saves the World!

Nobody Saves the World is an excellent title from Drinkbox Studios. The studio has pretty much proved that they are capable of tackling any genre and turning it into an experience that is challenging, addictive and entertaining. Nobody Saves the World should not be compared to Diablo or Zelda because in my opinion, it’s in a league of its own. One of the best games I’ve played this year. I highly recommend picking it up on Nintendo Switch.

Ritual of Raven

Grab your Book of Shadows and cast some spells in Ritual of Raven!

I was spellbound in Ritual of Raven

Ritual of Raven is a quest fest and a collecting paradise. The story bobs along like the cheeky raven, moving from one place to another, all guided, but with no time pressure.

Creating enchantments to control the adorable pot-like Arcana Constructs is definitely a highlight, and although I have a couple of niggles with the game, overall, it’s cast its spell and I’m totally bewitched by it.

Check out our guide to the enchantments.

Tin Hearts

Behind every brilliant invention hides an incredible story.

James commanded the troops in Tin Hearts

Tin Hearts is really something quite special. Even the most hardened of gamers will struggle not to be moved by some aspect of the charm on display here. Whether it’s the heart-felt soundtrack, calm but satisfying gameplay or the emotional beats of the story.

Tin Hearts is the sort of title I love seeing in gaming. An original idea that is different from anything that comes before is made all the more memorable with its unique historical premise. The game is single-player only, but I can see this being a fun one to play together with loved ones on the sofa. Pointing at the screen to try to solve the problems together. Tin Hearts is a wonderful feel-good title which might be just what you need on a rainy day.

TOEM clicked with Mina:

I love this game. I love TOEM so much. It’s sweet, adorable, funny and full of fun and interesting NPCs to meet and take photos of. The world may be in black and white, but it’s lovingly detailed and wonderfully rendered. The music is wonderful and there are a lot of thoughtful details to make players love it even more. Two thumbs up for TOEM!

Triangle Strategy

Challenge your convictions to save the realm of Norzelia in Square Enix’s newest HD-2D adventure

Which conviction would you choose: Morality; Utility; or Liberty in Triangle Strategy

Triangle Strategy is absolutely worth the asking price, even if you only play it once. It performs well in so many departments: gameplay, story, visuals, music, controls, and replayability. I’ve had no major complaints.

It may take inspiration from venerable classics like Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics, but Triangle Strategy feels modern enough to be accessible to newcomers. And thanks to the adjustable difficulty, it’s suitable for both SRPG veterans and beginners alike.
