Mechjestic – A Stunning Steampunk Deckbuilder with Depth and Charm

Mechjestic is an upcoming steampunk-inspired roguelike deckbuilder RPG that blends card-based mechanics with mech customisation in a uniquely crafted world of frogs, gears, and epic battles. A demo is launching soon on Steam, but we were fortunate to get early hands-on time, and it’s already clear this is a title worth watching closely.

From the first moments, Mechjestic impresses with its richly detailed visuals, a one-of-a-kind theme, and compelling combat mechanics that make every encounter feel meaningful. If you’re a fan of games like Slay the Spire, Inscryption, or SteamWorld, this might just be your next obsession.

Hop Into Battle: A Frog with a Mission

In Mechjestic, you play as Frolein, a skilled frog engineer piloting her trusty mech, Iron Tadpole. Your mission? Defeat the villainous Dr. Chronos and his army of mechanical insectoid invaders known as Inspectors. While the story is kept light in the demo, it offers just enough intrigue to frame the journey ahead.

What really stands out is the distinct steampunk-frog fusion art style. Everything from the mechs to the enemies bursts with personality and detail, looking like they’ve leapt out of an illustrated steampunk novel. Add to that a powerful orchestral soundtrack, complete with clanging metal and cinematic swells, and battles feel epic, even in early stages.

Deckbuilding Meets Mech Crafting

After a brief but effective tutorial, you’re given the reins to explore the overworld map and begin building your deck. Whether you’re new to deckbuilders or a seasoned strategist, Mechjestic eases you in with smart onboarding, but lets confident players skip straight to the action.

Each step across the map must be made carefully. Explore too much without entering battles, and your mech starts to lose health. This clever twist forces players to weigh risk vs. reward at every turn, adding a tactical layer to movement itself. Treasures, traps, and challenges await, each potentially altering your loadout for the better (or worse).

Battles themselves are fuelled by a resource literally called fuel. Every turn, you draw cards and must decide how best to use your fuel to activate them. Special cards allow you to regain fuel by sacrificing others in your hand, creating a satisfying rhythm of trade-offs and strategy. You can debuff enemies, boost your own stats, or deliver crushing attacks if you’ve managed your hand wisely.

Build-a-Mech: Tactical and Stylish

One of Mechjestic’s most unique mechanics is the Build-a-Mech system, where you play Equipment cards to modify and upgrade Iron Tadpole. Arms, legs, torsos, and engines can all be slotted in, each offering buffs like improved attack power or defence. Equipping a full set from the same series even grants special bonuses, rewarding thoughtful deck composition.

Completing a mech set isn’t just cosmetic, it’s strategic. Combining the right parts with the right cards can be the difference between a close win and total defeat. And with engine upgrades, you can fine-tune your playstyle: prefer extra defence each turn, more card draws, or simply more fuel to power your cards? The engine system lets you decide.

Final Thoughts: A Mech Made in Heaven

While the demo only offers a glimpse into Mechjestic’s full scope, what’s here is incredibly promising. The gorgeous visuals, tactical depth, and unique theme set it apart from other deckbuilders on the market. The blend of exploration, strategy, and mech customisation offers something fresh for fans of both card games and roguelikes.

Mechjestic is absolutely one to keep on your wishlist, and with the demo arriving soon, you won’t have to wait long to experience its charm for yourself.
