Meganoid: Chronicles – A Tough Little Treasure Hunt
If I had to sum up Meganoid: Chronicles in one sentence, I’d say it’s Indiana Jones by way of an arcade cabinet that really wants you to suffer, but in a strangely satisfying way. Developed by Orange Pixel, this tough-as-nails precision platformer has finally made its way from mobile devices to the Nintendo Switch, and honestly, it feels right at home here.
Orange Pixel has built a reputation for creating clever, minimalist games with a retro bite, and Meganoid: Chronicles sticks to that DNA. It’s a pure test of timing and reflexes wrapped in a simple, no-fuss package. There’s no grand story to follow or deep lore to learn. It’s just you, your adventurer, and a hundred tiny levels out to make you sweat.

Small Levels, Big Pain (and Satisfaction)
The premise: make it to the end of the level alive. Along the way, you’ll want to try grab the hidden idol buried somewhere in the environment, and maybe even do it all fast enough to earn the bonus medal for speed. Easy on paper, but Meganoid doesn’t pull punches.
Each level is a little gauntlet of spikes, arrows, collapsing platforms, and the occasional angry snake. A single hit means instant death and a quick restart, no checkpoints, no safety nets. But because each level lasts only a few seconds once mastered, you’re pulled into that addictive loop of “just one more go.”
That’s where the game really shines. You can finish a stage in under 10 seconds or spend 10 minutes trying to perfect your run. It’s punishing, yes, but it feels fair. Unlike some other rage-inducing platformers, Meganoid gives you subtle clues. A faint glimmer on the ground hints at a hidden spike trap, or a loose stone above warns that a boulder’s ready to drop. The result? A hard game that rewards observation just as much as quick reflexes.

Simple Controls, Sharp Design
You only have a few moves at your disposal: run and jump, but Orange Pixel squeezes a lot of creativity from those basics. It’s the kind of game where your skill genuinely improves with time. The early levels ease you in before the later ones gleefully stomp you into the dust.
Still, that simplicity is what makes Meganoid such a great fit for handheld play. It’s the perfect pick-up-and-play title for short bursts. Whether you’re on the bus or waiting for the kettle to boil, there’s always time to bash out a few levels and curse at a spike pit or two.

Retro Style
Visually, Meganoid: Chronicles delivers exactly what fans of Orange Pixel have come to expect: crisp pixel art, strong colours, and a distinct retro flair. There’s clear evolution here compared to the developers’ earlier works; everything looks a touch more detailed without losing that classic aesthetic.
The ruined temple backdrops and blocky traps perfectly capture that old-school Rick Dangerous feel (a classic from the microcomputer era). The short “thumbs up” animation your character gives after each successful run adds a dash of personality. The soundtrack is a buzzing chiptune score that keeps the pace snappy and your nerves on edge. It’s the kind of music that dares you to keep going, even after your fiftieth failure.
A Brutal Bargain
Let’s be honest: Meganoid: Chronicles isn’t for everyone. It’s hard, sometimes brutally so, and players looking for a more relaxed experience might want to steer clear. But if you thrive on tough platformers that make you earn every inch of progress, this is a nice little challenge. At just a few pounds, it’s an absolute bargain.

Conclusion: Tough Love Done Right
Meganoid: Chronicles knows exactly what it wants to be, short, sharp, and unapologetically difficult. The clever level hints, snappy design, and responsive controls all come together for a satisfying, if occasionally infuriating, experience.
I’ll admit, there were moments where I wanted to throw my Switch across the room. But then I’d take a breath, dive back in, and nail that jump that had been haunting me. That’s when you know a precision platformer has done its job.
If you’ve got the patience for pain and a fondness for old-school challenge, Meganoid: Chronicles is worth your time.
