Plus Ultra: Legado is a 2025 indie adventure game, developed by Póntica and released by Megalevel.

The Premise of Plus Ultra: Legado
Plus Ultra: Legado is a 2D Metroidvania, set during Mexico’s inception in the 16th century. We play as Don Juan, a Spanish explorer, who embarks on a daring mission to Veracruz to apprehend Hernán Cortés, whom the Spanish Crown views as a traitor. On his journey, he meets a cast of fictional and real characters, introduces us to a tapestry of historical events, and creates his own legacy.
Gameplay
In Plus Ultra: Legado, we explore a sprawling metroid-style world with diverse landscapes, including sandy beaches, towering volcanoes, snowy highlands, jungles, and even majestic Mesoamerican cities.
Everything is in a stylish ligne-claire comic style, the style that Hergé, the creator of The Adventures of Tintin, came up with. It is a drawing style that uses clear, strong lines and no shading, and often features intense colors and a combination of cartoonish characters against a realistic background.
As mentioned, the game is set during the 16th century in Mexico, and from what I could tell, it was remarkably historically accurate—from the clothes and weapons to the architecture and some of the real historical persons mentioned.

In terms of gameplay, Plus Ultra: Legado combines a variety of classic metroidvania elements, including 2D platforming, exploration, complex maps, boss battles, new abilities, and upgrades.
In terms of complex maps, there’s a handy map in a corner of the screen, but be prepared to do a lot of backtracking and wandering around, especially after unlocking a new ability and suddenly a new part of the map is accessible.
The controls are intuitive and straightforward. You can play with a keyboard or a gamepad. I had trouble until I figured out how to navigate and progress dialogue—you smash the speech bubbles. And speaking of, unlike other games, where you have to finish a dialogue before moving on, here you can move while talking and progress the dialogue quite quickly or leave it altogether.
An interesting element of the game is that the characters are rendered in 3D, while the backgrounds are in 2D. At the same time, everything looks like a comic book. Even the maps look like stacked comic book panels. When our hero is moving around, he’s seamlessly traversing between the panels.

Difficulty of Plus Ultra: Legado
The things that attracted me to the game initially—visuals, story, historical setting — did not disappoint. All these aspects are great and well executed. As a bonus, the soundtrack is excellent and fully deserving of its own release. However, Plus Ultra: Legado is a challenging game, especially for someone like me, who is not great at platformers to begin with. Movement is snappy, and I find myself often falling off the edges of platforms. There’s this bouncing ability, where we bounce off the heads of enemies or objects – I can’t get the hang of it.I completely understand that these problems are not with the game, but rather the player. If you like platformers, I can’t think of a single issue or bug that would put you off Plus Ultra: Legado. I think it is a delightful game, well worth the time, that shows and explores a part of the world and its history, rarely shown in games.

Some Other Things
Conclusion
Plus Ultra: Legado is a delightful surprise with a lot to offer. Despite being platformer-challenged as a rule, I played quite a bit longer than usual. Since it’s unlikely that I will be able to finish the game on my own, I will be eagerly awaiting someone uploading their gameplay onto YouTube, so I can see how the story unfolds.
If you like platformers, do give Plus Ultra: Legado a try; you will be quite charmed.
Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up![]()
