Pokemon Direct 2019 – New Main Title Revealed

Just today a new Pokemon Direct ran for seven minutes. It showcased the reveal of the latest main Pokemon game for the Nintendo Switch. You can watch it here:

Pokemon Sword and Shield

The first area they showed is a beautiful countryside with the playable characters. The trailer then shows them walking around various areas such as a city, a mountain and a mining tunnel. Some familiar Pokemon such as Munchlax were shown. Then it showed non gameplay footage to reveal the three new starter Pokemon. A fire rabbit called Scorbunny, an axlotl Sobble and a grass monkey known as Grookey.

Then they announced the titles of Pokemon Sword and Shield set to release late 2019 (I’m assuming November). The logos have a wolf style Pokemon suggesting either the new legendaries or some important story Pokemon. The name of the region is the Galar Region and its map (or at least what we’ve seen of it) is longer rather than wider. As most other Pokemon regions have been.

Much To Learn

Asides from the region and starter Pokemon much is left to be revealed. They talked about many new Pokemon being in the game. Which would include the legendaries, and of course they have to talk about the ever important version exclusives. What the gym leaders are, what team will be going against, what annoying friendly “rival” they’ll hoist upon us next? Will they continue Mega Evolution (almost certainly)? Whether there is any Pokemon Go connection? Of course they have plenty of time to tease the game.

They also announced that there are other Pokemon things in the works but this game was the only reveal.

Overall

I’m glad the designs of the starters are pleasant. At first I didn’t like Scorbunny but he does look a bit like Buneary. Sobble is obviously the right choice, although what the evolutions look like will be a determining factor. The graphical style appears to be a blend of Sun and Moon, and Let’s Go. I can’t stay I like it as some things look realistic and others don’t. At least the faces of the main characters look nice. Some of the Pokemon look better in place than others, but that might be the lighting of the area.

I’m also hoping for some more Pokemon spin off games like another Mystery Dungeon. Until we find out more about it I can’t say I’m excited, but I know I’m going to get it.

Which starter do you think you’ll pick?
