A game for pattern lovers
Do you know your polka dots from argyle motif and your paisley from your checkered design? The Unic is a game on Mobile, that’s all about finding that unique pattern in a sea of patterns. If you love puzzle games and colors and patterns as well, the Unic might be for you.
Opening up the game, a little tutorial takes you through what you need to know to get going. When you get a new play screen, you see that all patterns are represented twice, but for that one elusive unique pattern. If you find it, tick on it twice, and every time you do so, a duplicate disappears, creating another Unic that way.
If you make a mistake, instead of turning golden, the shape turns into a wood pattern. To repair your mistake, find the double of the one you accidentally tapped, and tap that one as well.
Sounds easy, if it weren’t for the timer in the game. And the faster you solve it, the more time bonus you get on the next ones. To regain some time in a match, you can also flip duplicates and get the woody pattern. But, as there will be less unique pieces to uncover, you will not be able to have a good score.
Solving the puzzle quickly gives you a scoring and diamonds accordingly.
What to ‘buy’ with the diamonds
This is a freemium game, but of course that means a mode of currency as well. In this game, the diamonds are the currency which you can use to buy items that can help you in the game:
- Bunch of Flip Booster: this is a way to be able to let more patterns disappear into the wooden pattern and earn you more time.
- Unic Bomb: flips the Unic for you
- Hint: shows you the vicinity of the Unic.
- Time Freeze: freezes time until you find the Unic.
- Collectible: new shard. You will have a new pack of patterns to collect with other beautiful patterns. With enough diamonds, you can also get more packs in your deck.
Of course, although the game is free, you can buy gems with real money. Any purchase will also remove adds.
Time crunch
After you achieve 3 packs in your deck you can play in Zen mode. Very important as far as I’m concerned, as I don’t do well with timers and the pressure that comes with it. However, you only get five Zen plays a day. It’s possible to play in Zen unlimited, but at a price of €7,99 I do wonder if it’s worth putting that up.
There are several other modes in the game. The Crazy Flip Mode, allowing you to flip as much as you want. With this endless stock of flips and a terribly short timer, it’s a race against the clock.
Conclusion
As I mentioned at the beginning, this is a game that is specifically for pattern lovers. You start out with two pattern collection slots and you can earn new patterns to use. Which makes finding the Unic more fun. The game tries to keep you entertained as well by a new quest everyday.
The Unic is a good looking game with the colours and the patterns. I like it for a bit, but the Zen mode is what really got me enthusiastic. I’m no good when it comes to timers and pressure, which is why I like the game, but a standard Zen would be more to my liking.
