Raising your Snakes

In Scaling Up, your objective is to manage a ranch, raise snakes and gather resources. As you create your ranch, you will be able to choose a biome and a dragon to be your character — that is, if you have unlocked new biomes and dragons. For the first playthrough, you’ll start with the Plains Ranch and the blue dragon, which is good at everything but not particularly great at anything.

In your ranch, you will be able to gather wood, stones and fiber to begin the first few builds that will house some of the snakes. Every snake has a different role that helps manage the ranch — some will fish for food, some can chop down trees and mine stone, but there are ones that will only give scales that are necessary for construction. By the way, scales are super important as they are needed for all the builds, and you will need to collect scales from all available snakes to advance.

Develop your Ranch

Scaling Up is like Stardew Valley with snakes, so that you don’t have to do everything by yourself. Since every snake has a unique role, every build also has a unique role, and if you plan accordingly, you can even automate a lot of processes. Some snakes will feed other snakes, some will clean builds and some will transport items from every build to the nest, where everything is stored.

Snakes also have a level of affinity that will rise when they are taken care of. This allows them to drop rarer scales that sell for more gold—a valuable resource needed for building, buying snakes, acquiring more land, and more. Once you gather all the basic resources that are available on your land, you will unlock the expeditions. That’s where the real challenge begins.

In the expeditions, more resources are available, unique resources that you will not be able to harvest on the ranch. But the expeditions get harder and harder for every new biome you unlock. To better prepare your snake,s you will need to equip them with tools and armour made on the scale forge, and upgrade them constantly. This is where most of the difficulty on Scaling Up lies: overcoming a series of new challenges presented by the new terrains.

The Expeditions

When you begin the expeditions, your snakes will be able to handle them perfectly, but there will come a moment when your snakes won’t be able to advance any further. This is the moment to strategize better. First, the equipment will be necessary; better stats might be all it takes. But once you unlock the sea expedition, your wood snakes won’t be able to go on the expeditions. This is where you will need to read all the equipment descriptions carefully and even take a closer look at the research tab.

The thing is, you might feel stuck because you need the resources from the new expeditions, at the same time that you can’t seem to complete any of them because your snakes are too weak. The dragon can help sometimes, but I guarantee that the snakes can do it too; you just need to find the best snake and equip it with the best equipment for each excursion. But I can see that this part of the game might feel a little frustrating because the progression is not very intuitive.

One thing that helps a lot is the research. You can build the viper lab to start researching new builds and new snakes, and that’s where you can find some very special snakes to help you on the expeditions. Some snakes can glow in the dark, some snakes can swim, and some can even tolerate high temperatures. This will help a lot on the expeditions.

A Few Other Things

Scaling Up has season and weather features that mainly affects fish and insects that appear on the ranch. You have a variety of insects that you can collect, and the same for fish. They will change from season to season and from weather. The fish especially have another hidden variable that is the type of water they can be caught in — if it’s ocean, river, lake, etc. I do think this variable should be a little clearer. Honestly, that’s my biggest criticism of this game — there are too many things that are not as clear as they should be.

You will need to figure out a lot of things on your own. That’s interesting, but frustrating at the same time. It took me way more time than it should to understand that I would need to pay very much attention to strategize and figure out the path to advance. It’s not rocket science once you get the formula, but until then, you might think you hit an untraversable wall as I did a few times.

Mostly, I can say this game is very much like an idle game that you open and let it run in the background while you do other stuff on your computer. And you can face it like that, as you need to gather a lot of materials and that can take a while. But thankfully, you have an option to speed up the time and do things a little bit more quickly, but the difficulty escalation still reminds me a lot of Cookie Clicker, where you cannot do much; then you can do a lot of things; and suddenly everything is very difficult to do.

Conclusion

Scaling Up has a lot of things to explore — way more than you might think at first sight. And the difficulty scales very rapidly, which may get a few players lost in the process. But understanding the progress is very satisfying and engaging.

It’s a fun little game that may seem more casual than it actually is, presenting a real challenge and being very grinding. Also, there is lots of content for people to enjoy and spend a lot of hours trying to get every snake, every upgrade and complete the collection. It’s one of those games that you won’t be able to unlock everything in the first playthrough, as you will need new ranches to find all insects and fish. But it’s enjoyable, and it’s pleasant, and I had a great time playing it. I will definitely play more in the future to try to complete everything!
