Snow Bros. Wonderland: Winter is Coming, The Good Kind

Snow Bros. Wonderland marks the frosty return of the Snow Bros series, an arcade classic that began with two boys who somehow got turned into snowmen and tasked to save the realm. Originally released in the ’90s, this cult series got a sequel, then hibernated until someone finally decided it was time to unfreeze the magic for modern consoles. I’ll admit that this franchise wasn’t on my retro radar despite my love of old-school gaming. But Snow Bros. Wonderland sure made its mark, like a snowball to the face.

Not only does this entry deliver a full graphical and gameplay overhaul, but it somehow retains the nostalgic charm of the originals. It’s a great entry point for newcomers and a cosy winter coat for long-time fans. Plus, with up to four-player co-op, it’s a tempting holiday pick for some chaotic couch gaming.

Snow Bros to the Rescue

The plot is pure 90s arcade gold: a bad demon lord is terrorizing the kingdom, so two boys use magical stones to turn themselves into snowmen and save the day. Yep, they choose to become snowmen and talk about commitment.

The story could’ve stopped there (and honestly, it probably should’ve), but Snow Bros. Wonderland insists on padding the drama with long-winded cutscenes and hilariously over-the-top voice acting. It’s like the developers decided to resurrect the glorious cringe of early 90s game dubs, and honestly, I’m here for it. If you grew up during that era, the intentionally cheesy performances would feel like a warm, slightly awkward hug.

Of course, if you or your co-op buddies get tired of the lore dumps, you can skip them with a simple button press. Because really, we’re all here for the snowball carnage, not Oscar-winning narratives.

Save the world with the power of snow

Do You Want to Build a Snowman?

Even if you’ve never played the earlier games, it doesn’t take long to figure out the main gimmick: you shoot snow pellets at enemies, freeze them into giant snowballs, and then hit them across the level like a frosty wrecking ball. Watching your snowball smash into a bunch of bad guys and rack up combos is absurdly satisfying, especially when it starts dropping ridiculous food items as rewards. (Apparently, a rolling snowball releases sushi. Don’t ask why; just enjoy.) Just be careful not to get caught in your own snowball, though, as this will harm your combo meter, though it is fun to witness.

Not every snowball is a success, but that just makes you want to try again. The gameplay cleverly encourages chasing high scores, which feels refreshing in a world where most games don’t even bother with scoreboards anymore.

Levels follow a classic platformer template, with bite-sized sections that alternate between “clear all enemies to progress” and “find your way to the exit.” It’s simple, fun, and doesn’t overstay its welcome. And just when you start to think, “Is that it?” boom! a boss fight pops up to keep things interesting.

Level Up or Dress Up

Getting high scores isn’t just for bragging rights; you earn coins that can unlock equipable buffs like increased health or faster shots. However, those same coins are also used for unlocking cosmetics because nothing says “epic snowman hero” like a fancy new hat. Unfortunately, most players will probably prioritize practical upgrades over fashion statements, but at least some unlockables are earned naturally just by playing.

Co-op: Snow Much Fun (or Maybe Too Much)

The game shines brightest in co-op mode, with up to four players joining the frosty fray. Sadly, I could not test the game with this many people (because apparently, I need more friends), but even with just two players, it’s a blast. The drop-in, drop-out system is simple, and the controls are accessible enough for most audiences, though gaming newbies might need a few minutes to warm up.

That said, I wonder if four players might feel a little… cramped. The levels aren’t exactly sprawling, and the chaos of everyone scrambling to smash enemies might make things a bit too hectic. Two players seem like the sweet spot, but if you’ve got the right crew, four-player mayhem could be part of the charm.

Snowball-Sized Niggles

As delightful as Wonderland is, it’s not without its flaws. The transition to 3D isn’t always smooth; jumping can feel unresponsive at times, leading to annoying moments of falling off platforms and having to backtrack. Also, lining up snowball attacks in high-pressure situations (like boss fights) can be trickier than it should be. A “hold and aim” mechanic would’ve been a welcome addition.

Winter Wonderland Vibes

The graphics are as charming as a Hallmark Christmas movie, with colourful, family-friendly designs that even make the enemies look cute. Nothing here will scare younger players, making it an easy pick for family gaming nights. The snowman animations are particularly endearing, from their high-knee runs to the way they glide across icy platforms.

The soundtrack is equally delightful, with upbeat tunes that capture the game’s whimsical winter vibes. Although the theme is heavily snowy, this isn’t a game you have to save for December; it’s frosty fun all year round.

Conclusion: A Jolly Good Time

Snow Bros. Wonderland is a cheerful platformer that successfully brings the arcade magic of its predecessors into the modern era. While the story might overstay its welcome, and the controls can feel a little slippery at times, the overall experience is as satisfying as a snow day.

Whether you’re playing solo or with friends, it’s a great way to chill out (pun intended) this holiday season.

Final Verdict: I Like it a Lot!  I like it a lot
