SOPA – Tale of the Stolen Potato is a 2025 indie adventure game, developed and released by StudioBando.

The Premise of SOPA – Tale of the Stolen Potato

In SOPA – Tale of the Stolen Potato, we play as Miho, who steps into the pantry to fetch a potato for his grandma and falls into a magical world full of wonders. We meet quirky characters, explore South America, and learn the importance of the things we pass along.

Gameplay

In SOPA – Tale of the Stolen Potato, we embark on a fantastical journey as Miho, who must retrace the steps of a mysterious great traveller. We travel through vast rainforests, teetering towns, meet talking beasts, and quirky new friends. We find ingredients for Grandmama’s soup, but each time we return to the kitchen, things have changed in strange new ways.

In terms of gameplay, SOPA is an intriguing blend of first-person platforming and point-and-click puzzles. We have an inventory and a task list. Most of the tasks are actually obstacles we need to overcome, such as a broken bridge or finding a boat. The solutions are usually more practical and more straightforward than we might see in other games of the genre.

Some parts of the game include chasing and running around. The movement is controlled by WASD on the keyboard, with Shift held for running. The camera is moving and adjusting automatically. It can be awkward at times, and it takes some getting used to. At the same time, at specific points, the way the camera moves and adjusts makes for some very cinematic viewpoints of Miho.

We also have a lot of side quests, allowing us to stay longer in Miho’s world and also collect pieces for Grandma’s clay figurine collection. The developers cite Spirited Away, The Little Prince, and Coco as inspiration for the game, and SOPA does bear some resemblance to them. I was also heavily reminded of 2023’s Venba, because of the color scheme and the story of family and Planet of Lana, for the cinematic journey Miho takes in the game.

The puzzling and the platforming part of the game are light and not overly complicated, but that doesn’t diminish the gaming experience SOPA offers to its audience. The game’s real strength lies in its setting, story, and characters. It is also absolutely gorgeous, rendered in soft shapes and warm colors that make the whole gaming experience feel just like a hot bowl of soup on a cold day. From the first scene of the game, SOPA boasts an exceptional cinematic quality, which is well complemented by a rich and beautiful soundtrack featuring Latin American beats from various contemporary underground artists.

Some Other Things

SOPA – Tale of the Stolen Potato has basic audio and video settings. We choose whether to play with a gamepad or a mouse and keyboard at the very beginning of the game. We can turn off motion blur in the settings menu. There are some chases in the game, so for people who get motion sickness while playing, it might be a good idea to use that option. SOPA – Tale of the Stolen Potato uses an automatic saving system. It also features Steam achievements, but not trading cards yet.

Conclusion

SOPA – Tale of the Stolen Potato is a warm and colorful adventure filled with wit and heart. Suppose you are in the mood for some lighthearted fun, with plenty of exploration, humor, and endearing stories. In that case, SOPA – Tale of the Stolen Potato might be the game for you.

Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up: Two thumbs up
