Summer Game Recommendations

Summer is here so now felt like a good opportunity to look back on all the reviews I’ve written for Ladies Gamers and make some Summer game recommendations. I didn’t really have a specific criteria for what makes a Summer game. These were just the ones that vibrate the Summer vibes. All can be enjoyed alone but most can be enjoyed together. Thank you for reading and have fun gaming this Summer!

The Summer Project – Bug Fables

For those that have a long break and are looking for a unique RPG to sink some time into you then Bug Fables has you covered. Bug Fables will win your heart over in many ways. The story is presented with a lot of charm and humour including memorable characters and moments in its narrative. Even if you’re not a fan of creepy crawlies it’s hard not to look at this hand-drawn 2D graphical style and not feel a calming warmth to its design.

Coming onto the gameplay you have a battle system where all the encounters require constant attention from the player, requiring thought into the right moves to use and then inputting the appropriate button actions. This is not an RPG where battles feel the same and overdone and you certainly can’t win by always opting for the attack move. I chose this as a Summer game mostly due to its charming presentation and because much of the game is set in the outdoors, you can almost smell the fresh air. It’s a long game so expect this one to take you the whole Summer to conquer possibly even longer

Summer Fun for Two – Cat Quest 2

Need something to enjoy with a loved one and also happen to like cats and dogs? Then Cat Quest 2 comes highly recommended. A simple but charming adventure that is easy to pick and play for gamers of all skill levels. Roam around a literal map completing bitesize quests with addictive hack and slash controls. An ideal title to play in short or long bursts depending on how long the plane ride is. Suitable for all ages and skill levels this is the purrfect co-op title for the Summer break.

The game also received a pretty extensive update adding more quests and items to collect. You may even want to consider revisiting the title again if you have stepped away for a period. Why a Summer game? Well, it’s hard not to look at the cute faces in this game and feel a warm Summer-like glow from within. The only potential argument is deciding who plays the dog and who plays the cat.

Beach Time for the Whole Family – Instant Sports Paradise

Instant Sports Paradise is the ideal pick for something everyone in the family can enjoy. A collection of mini-games which are accessed by roaming around a holiday resort-like island is playable for all ages. From the younglings gamers to the Grandparents who may or may not be experienced with Wii Sports. Mini-games can be enjoyed with motion or analogue controls so there is a style that suits everyone. When you’re not competing in games you can simply explore the island, engaging in some extra co-op activities like fishing, treasure hunting and even shopping for cosmetics.

The reason for a Summer game is apparent from the game’s appearance. It just projects the Summer holiday feeling with its design. Not a flawless game as some of the mini-games are kinda take it or leave it but one can’t argue it will provide some Summer entertainment whether you are able to go on holiday at a real beach resort or not.  Wearing an exotic coloured shirt is optional for this experience.

The Summer Internship – Hundred Days – Wine Making Simulator

If you’re like me, Summer is often just a time to work and attempt to earn money rather than actually jet away on holiday. So if you’re looking for a simulator that’s a bit different then you may want to try Hundred Days. Craft yourself the best wine possible, going through the slow but rewarding process of wine creation from picking the grapes to customizing the bottles you sell your fine brew in. There is a lot to get stuck into in this title.

What still resonates with me in this game is how failure to make the best wine is not the end of the world. Just another little lesson to learn for next time. You really feel like you are going through the journey from amateur to professional with each cycle. The package is also wrapped up in a nice pick-up and play experience which even features touch controls on the handheld. An ideal pick to enjoy during your lunch breaks or after a long hard day at work. Even though it’s a simulator this game really doesn’t feel like work at all and may just make for a nice video game internship if you want to take it on.

For The Summer Blues – Rain on Your Parade

Summer is not for everyone. For some of us, it does come with more stress and isn’t the happy smiley experience the adverts on TV will make it out to be. If times are hard, a video game I have often always thought about it’s a little indie called Rain on Your Parade. In this, you play a little cloud floating around various missions causing all sorts of mischief. From ruining weddings, to painting art, to even causing a Zombie apocalypse.

It’s not often a game that will consistently surprise you. The game is only one player but my wife and I had terrific fun passing the controller to each other between its bite-sized missions and just watching the madness on screen. It’s very hard to play this and not smile about something. Life can be very hard sometimes. But video games can have this magical power just to take you away a bit and remind you that things are not so bad. So if you suffer the Summer blues or know a friend that does, pick up Rain on Your Parade and be sure to share it together.
