The Pane Puzzle: A Simple Puzzler

The Pane Puzzle is the kind of game that confidently declares, “I’m simple, and I know it.” It’s a straightforward, no-frills colour-matching puzzler aimed squarely at those who want to unwind after a long day. Picture the sort of mini-game you might stumble across in a big-budget adventure, usually, something you solve in less than five minutes before getting back to slaying dragons or saving the world. Now imagine that mini-game stretched out over 100 puzzles, taking centre stage. That’s The Pane Puzzle. It won’t appeal to everyone, but much like Sudoku or crosswords, it has its niche audience.

Colour Matching for the Patient Soul

The concept is simplicity itself. You’re shown an image on one side of the screen and tasked with recreating it using a series of coloured panels from the bottom of the screen. The panels can be rotated, flipped, and layered until your masterpiece matches the original image. But don’t get too comfortable, once you place a panel, there’s no editing it unless you restart the puzzle. Yep, this game demands commitment!

The real challenge doesn’t lie in choosing the right colours (they’re already provided) but in figuring out the correct order and orientation. Early puzzles are a breeze, but they gradually ramp up in complexity, requiring a bit more thought and patience. The controls are as basic as the gameplay itself: a few mouse clicks and the occasional use of buttons in the corner to rotate or clear the image. It’s designed to be accessible to just about anyone, even those who aren’t typically gamers. If somehow you do get stuck, you can click a hint button to reveal the solution to the puzzles in 3 steps, still giving you the opportunity to try to solve the rest yourself.

Pick a colour

However, it feels like the developers left some creative potential on the table. For a game that’s all about colours, there’s no option to mix them or create more intricate designs. Imagine how much more engaging it could have been with stained glass-like effects or puzzles that felt like assembling a vivid mosaic! Instead, it plays it safe, sticking to the basics, which is fine for those seeking a relaxing experience but might leave others wanting more.

Graphics and Sounds: A Bare-Bones Affair

Visually, The Pane Puzzle isn’t trying to win any beauty contests. The background is a plain, uninspired brown, accompanied by some soft, relaxing music. While the minimalist approach suits the game’s vibe, a little more flair wouldn’t have hurt. Why not have dynamic backgrounds that change as you progress? Or celebrate completed puzzles with more than a lacklustre “ta-da”? Even making the finished panels look like stained-glass windows or vivid paintings could have elevated the experience. Instead, what you see is what you get, no surprises, no sparkle.

Conclusion: Just Okay

Ultimately, The Pane Puzzle is… fine. It’s 100 straightforward panel puzzles served up at a low price, fine for casual players who want to relax without overthinking. Hardcore puzzlers might find it too simplistic, and the presentation could use a bit more polish. It didn’t leave much of an impression on me personally, but I can see its appeal to the Sudoku-and-tea crowd.

Would I recommend it? Let’s just say this: if you’re looking for a game to pass the time without breaking a sweat, give it a shot. If you want something with a bit more depth or pizzazz, you might want to look elsewhere.

Final Verdict: I’m Not Sure I'm not sure
