The look and feel of Truckful
Truckful immediately catches the eye with its colourful, textured art style. Rolling through green hills, quiet villages, and winding country roads feels pleasantly relaxing, while the adorable sheep roaming around the region add plenty of personality. Just don’t underestimate them. These fluffy little troublemakers are surprisingly capable of launching your pickup into the air without breaking a sweat.
On paper, Truckful feels like the kind of cozy exploration game many players would happily spend hours with. Driving from village to village, delivering packages and chatting with the locals creates a peaceful rhythm. Yet beneath that relaxing atmosphere, there’s always the feeling that something isn’t quite right. Some areas are also surprisingly maze-like. Narrow paths, dead ends and hidden shortcuts encourage exploration, although I occasionally wished for a little more guidance.
As for the sound design, nothing particularly stood out during the demo. The experience mainly relies on ambient noises to accompany your journey, letting the scenery take centre stage.
The Pros of Truckful
I really like Truckful‘s premise. Driving through an isolated region while gradually uncovering its secrets by helping the people who still live there is an intriguing concept. Every new delivery feels like another excuse to learn a little more about this mysterious place, even if the demo remains fairly secretive about what’s really going on.
My favourite part of the demo was, without hesitation, the forest.
Until then, Truckful feels bright, colourful, and inviting. Then the atmosphere shifts completely. The forest is darker, quieter and filled with an unsettling tension that contrasts beautifully with the peaceful countryside you’ve been driving through. Encountering something… not entirely natural in those woods genuinely caught me by surprise, and it’s easily where the mystery feels the strongest. Moments like these made me eager to keep driving, simply to discover what the next road might reveal.
The Cons of Truckful
Unfortunately, the driving itself never really clicked for me. Even by the end of the demo, I still wasn’t fully comfortable behind the wheel. Since driving is the core gameplay loop, struggling with the controls made exploring the region more frustrating than relaxing at times.
I also encountered a few technical issues that occasionally broke the immersion. During several conversations, character names didn’t match the person actually speaking. This happened multiple times between Rotti and the innkeeper, leaving me wondering who was actually delivering each line. On top of that, despite talking to plenty of townsfolk, I never felt like I had learned anything particularly meaningful about the mystery itself. For a narrative-driven demo, that felt a little disappointing.
The localisation also deserves a mention. The demo automatically launched in French based on my system settings, and I couldn’t find an option to switch languages. Unfortunately, the French translation contained numerous awkward sentences that made several conversations feel unnatural. Hopefully both the language selection and localisation will be improved before release.
Finally, I think a map would be a welcome addition. Getting lost and driving in circles on country roads quickly becomes frustrating. It’s realistic, perhaps… but that’s one aspect of real-life driving I’m perfectly happy to leave behind.
Final Thoughts
Truckful left me with mixed feelings. I genuinely enjoyed uncovering the mystery surrounding this isolated region, and the darker moments of the demo show that the game knows how to build an intriguing atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the driving mechanics, technical hiccups and localisation issues often got in the way of that experience. Instead of constantly wondering what secret the next delivery would uncover, I sometimes found myself wrestling with my pickup truck instead. Hopefully these rough edges will be smoothed out before release, because there is an interesting mystery hidden beneath them. For now, Truckful is a demo that left me not fully convinced yet.
