Wings of Endless: A Soaring Pixel Art Adventure

Some games don’t need to reinvent the genre; they just need to do everything right. Wings of Endless may wear its inspirations on its sleeve. Still, it crafts an engaging action-RPG experience with tight gameplay, charming characters, and a retro aesthetic that punches well above its price point. Within minutes of booting it up, I found myself happily hooked.

From Brash Bounty Hunter to Heroic Adventurer

You play as Hariku, a confident, hammer-wielding bounty hunter who’s more cocky than careful. Tasked with retrieving a mysterious artefact from ancient ruins, Hariku instead finds a talking owl (whom he affectionately dubs “Owly”). What begins as a simple errand quickly spirals into a sprawling, multi-regional journey involving forgotten wars, magical secrets, and a cast of unlikely allies.

The writing walks a fine line between earnest storytelling and playful humour, and it largely nails the balance. The three main characters, Hariku, a stealthy rogue, and a wise mage, bounce off each other with witty, often heartfelt banter that kept me invested. The story doesn’t overstay its welcome either, letting you dive back into the gameplay quickly while providing optional lore through scattered bookcases. Don’t feel like reading? The game cheekily gives you the option to admit “reading isn’t your thing” a small but brilliant touch of personality.

Three Heroes, One Seamless Adventure

What makes Wings of Endless shine isn’t just its world, but how you interact with it. After the introductory section, you eventually gain control of two additional characters, each with their own distinct abilities. Hariku swings a mighty hammer and dashes with the aid of Owly; the rogue can cloak and throw projectiles, while the mage casts elemental spells from afar.

Swapping between the three is instantaneous, allowing for dynamic combat combos and creative puzzle-solving. Whether breaking through barriers, sneaking past enemies, or targeting elemental weaknesses, every character feels useful and fun to play. Better yet, experience points are shared across the party, so you’re free to play favourites without falling behind in progression.

Level Up, Gear Up, Feather Up

Progression in Wings of Endless is both generous and satisfying. Levelling up earns you skill points, which can be invested in each character’s unique tree to unlock new abilities. Exploration is also rewarded, with hidden chests containing armour and weapons, complete with cosmetic changes, and “gold feathers” used to boost specific stats.

While gear is important, it’s not overwhelming. The game avoids overcomplicating its systems, keeping things approachable for genre newcomers while still offering depth for completionists. The inclusion of crafting, particularly for consumables, adds one more layer to an already well-balanced set of mechanics.

Side Quests, Secrets, and Slick Navigation

The world of Wings of Endless is surprisingly vast, divided into distinct biomes like snowy peaks, lush forests and scorching deserts. Each area offers a mix of main quests, side missions, and environmental puzzles that keep exploration interesting.

Side quests range from simple item hunts to more challenging combat encounters, and they always feel worth your time. The in-game map is clean and intuitive, tracking objectives and even allowing you to place custom markers for future reference, a feature more games should adopt.

Pixel Perfect Presentation

Visually, the game is a pixel art treat. With vibrant colours, detailed environments, and fluid character animations, Wings of Endless looks like a 16-bit classic that never existed. Think Mega Drive aesthetics with a modern polish. Enemy designs are unique to each region, avoiding palette swaps, and the boss fights are a definite highlight.

The soundtrack is equally charming, blending nostalgic melodies with sweeping themes that give each biome and story beat a proper sense of mood. It’s one of those soundtracks that sticks in your head long after you’ve closed the game.

Conclusion: Flying High and Worth Every Feather

Wings of Endless doesn’t try to change the genre; it just delivers everything you’d want from a 2D action-adventure RPG and does it well. With its dynamic combat, lovable cast, satisfying progression, and polished presentation, this is a game that quietly soars far above expectations.

At its budget-friendly price and with a free demo available on Steam, there’s no reason not to give this one a shot. For anyone craving a retro-inspired adventure that respects your time and rewards your curiosity, this is a must-play.

Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up  Two thumbs up

  1. For people who don’t like reading? Imagine if that were applied to this review: people would completely skip over it. Are people really this dumb these days that the thought of reading something is revolting to them?

Also, can you please stop with the Millennial/Gen Z cliches and avoid using words like “biomes”? That’s another issue people seem to have, the inability to think for themselves and form their own ideas.
