YvoCaro Plays: E3 wishes

With the E3 getting close, I decided this YvoCaro Plays should be about that special event. Although, come to think of it, I do have a sort of love/hate relation with it. Sometimes in the past it delighted…sometimes it also disappointed.

Let’s go back to 2010

Did you know one of the first E3 events I ever watched was the one where they showed us the first ever 3DS? That was 2010. What exiting times to be a gamer! They teased us with some super short footage for Animal Crossing New Leaf.

No matter how small a piece, this had us flocking to the store to pre-order the little device. It still took to March the following year for the nifty handheld console to arrive here in the West. And Animal Crossing was nowhere to be seen.

Ups in 2011 and downs in 2012

In 2011 we got to see more screenplay at that years’ E3. What a wonderful evening that was.

Nintendo teased us by showing us footage of villagers swimming in the new game. Here’s that announcement.

You know, even hearing the music makes me want to play. This was June 2011. Wow! That looked so special, the thought that we could dive for creatures too. Amazing. But, no date.

Big disappointment followed: At the E3 in 2012, nothing on Animal Crossing. Not a peep! Mind you, by then I had the 3DS and hardly a title to play on it. That night I learned E3 events can spoil your mood too.

Well finally: release in 2013

A long wait followed, New Leaf finally came West in June 2013. Two whole years after the first mention was made. With that under our belt, the waiting game started once again: will they bring Animal Crossing to the WiiU as well?

As we know in hindsight, the WiiU never got an AC game, and now we are still waiting for the Switch version.

The Smash E3 of 2018

I had high hopes when I watched the E3 of 2018. Surely, something would be announced. No matter how far away the actual release would be, a tiny bit of news would have been so welcome. As you might remember, Nintendo showed a 45 minute reel of game announcements. And for the biggest part, it was all about Smash Brothers.

I had never given the Smash games much thought, but on that night I really hated the game. Sure, it was a big title for Nintendo, but to go so in-depth about every minute detail? Of course, I vented about it afterward (article here) which earned lots of response on social media. A lot of AC fans felt the same, but one reader said I shouldn’t act as if I was entitled to a new AC game.

For me though, it wasn’t about that. Aside from my wishes, I felt that Nintendo should bring the game to market. It made business sense to engage an entire new demographic and entice them to buy a Switch!

The upcoming E3 of 2019

As you might have guessed, I have only one big wish: a release date. Sure, Nintendo has told us they plan on releasing it in 2019. But may I remind you that the companies’ fiscal year ends 31 March 2020? So we might still have to wait until the first quarter of that year.

So I hope for footage of the new game, a release date that isn’t too far away. Oh and details, lots of details! After all, after they bored me with them last year about Smash, I want details on my favorite game too! 😂

  1. One can only wish for “lots of details!” on AC, lol! But my guess is “lots of” Pokemon (again) ( even thou they just had a Pokemon direct few days ago) sInce they already post the release date.

I like the old management Satoru Iwata days. Not this new management where I see only $$$ in their eyes. Not that they shouldn’t after all it’s a company who needs to earn profit. I just prefer the older generation of how the direct used to be.

Not putting high hopes so I won’t be disappointed.

    1. You know, I had some sentimental thoughts too in seeing Iwata and Reggie on stage. I mean, they both had a way of speaking straight to us, didn’t they? The new management has been mainly absent, they push other faces forward to be their spokespersons
