Winter. It’s that time of year – snowy days, hot cocoa and a warm fire. The season makes me appreciate cozy wintry games! Here are five of my very favorite winter-themed games. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
Roki
Roki was one of the first cozy games I played, and it holds a special place in my heart. The setting is a beautiful Scandinavian Wilderness and features a unique take on Nordic Folklore. It’s a quest adventure-type game with many amazing secrets to discover.
The main character, Tove, is separated from her little brother Lars and must reunite with him. She is helped by talking trees, trolls and forest guardians in her quest. Roki has many beautiful areas to discover. It’s a 3D open-world game, and although certain quests have to be completed in a certain order, you are free to wander around and explore. The puzzles are fairly logical, although I confess I had to watch a walkthrough here and there to solve the toughest ones. I’d still recommend Roki to any cozy gamer!
Light Up The Town Demo
If you enjoy holiday decorating and looking at beautifully decorated homes, you’ll enjoy the game Light Up The Town. I played the demo and was enchanted. You play as Bean. She’s a sweet little girl ferret accompanied by her father, who is on crutches. For some reason, her mother is not with them, and I feel something sad has happened to this family.
The Dad says he’s not up to putting up the lights this year, so it’s up to Bean, meaning you!! You can put lights on just about anything and everything! Plus, you can decorate with snowmen, candy canes, beautifully wrapped Christmas packages and many other items. In the final version of the game, there will be plenty more areas in town to decorate and explore. Light Up The Town will get you into holiday mode as you relax at home with a cup of hot cocoa!
Milo And The Christmas Gift
Milo And The Christmas Gift is a cozy, family-oriented game about a cat named Milo. He is looking for his family’s pet rabbit, Toby, who hopped out the door when no one was watching. All the artwork was hand-painted and is so detailed that I feel like it should be framed and hung on a wall! You play as Milo in 5 short chapters and explore various areas looking for Toby. This is a short game, but it is totally free to play. It all takes place in a spectacular wintry wonderland. Milo And The Christmas Gift is a wonderful gift, given to us by the developer and artist Johan Scherft. Thank you!!
Dog Walk
I was so happy to play Dog Walk! It’s a short but totally free game. It’s all about a boy and his beloved dog taking a walk in a snowy area. The landscape is made of paper models, which were scanned and recreated for the game. When you play the game, make sure you watch the credits because there are videos of the game being made. It’s fascinating.
Dog Walk has no text, but it’s easy to understand the game. The boy and his dog have a few quests to complete, which are very enjoyable. It’s obvious they love each other, and also obvious that it’s the dog leading the walk, not the boy! Dog Walk is a game created by Blender Studio as a way for them to test and improve their craft. It’s truly a work of art, available on PC via Steam.
Deiland Pocket Planet
Not all of this game takes place in a winter wonderland, but this is an excellent game, and my character definitely travels to a wintry area, so I wanted to include it. In Deiland Pocket Planet, I play as Mun and visit the Planet of Ice often in my spaceship. It’s a very cold place with ice everywhere. There are Snow Monsters to do battle with and ice to collect as well as other quests on this chilly planet. Deiland Pocket Planet is one of my favorite games. There are many great adventures to be completed, including adventures on this snowy planet. I played it on a PC and purchased it on Steam.
