Astral Flux: A Roguelike That Shoots for the Stars

Astral Flux is a 2D action platformer infused with roguelike elements. At first glance, it might seem like a standard entry into a well-worn genre, but the more I played, the more I noticed some unique aspects that set Astral Flux apart from the crowd. However, this game’s distinct qualities may not appeal to everyone, especially those who prefer a more polished roguelike experience. Still, for fans of challenging games with a few rough edges, Astral Flux is worth exploring.

Lost in Space

The premise is straightforward: you follow two spacefaring scrappers who find themselves stranded after their ship breaks down in an unknown part of space. To repair their ship, they must explore nearby planets in search of essential resources. But as they dig deeper into these strange worlds, they uncover mysteries far beyond what they bargained for. The storyline is minimalist, presented through brief, to-the-point cutscenes that avoid interrupting the gameplay. While an air of mystery lingers around the planets, the primary focus is on the gameplay rather than a deep narrative. For players who prefer an emphasis on action over story, this streamlined approach will likely be welcome.

On the Clock

The core gameplay loop involves exploring procedurally generated levels, defeating a boss, and collecting an item to progress to the next planet. Along the way, you’ll encounter an array of hazards, hostile lifeforms, and environmental traps. But the biggest threat to your survival is a limited oxygen supply, which adds a persistent timer to each level. This countdown forces players to stay on task, with few opportunities to replenish oxygen. Unlike many roguelikes that encourage exploration, Astral Flux requires efficient movement and strategic decision-making to survive. Once you defeat a boss and acquire the item, your mission isn’t over; you must make your way back through the level while dealing with more aggressive enemies, adding an extra layer of intensity to the game’s already tense loop.

Tools for the Job

The game begins with a tutorial that introduces basic controls, which are intuitive yet challenging. You can jump, shoot in multiple directions, perform a melee attack, and dash in any direction, allowing for fluid movement across each level. Despite this range of abilities, your character is initially underpowered, heightening the game’s difficulty. In each level, you may have the opportunity to upgrade one skill if you’re lucky enough to find a challenge room. These rooms contain waves of enemies that, once defeated, grant rewards.

Alternatively, some levels have hidden rooms with special runes that can be collected to alter the game’s settings in future runs. However, these runes often increase the difficulty rather than offering a tangible benefit, reducing the incentive to experiment with them. While this concept has potential, the execution feels unbalanced, as many players may find the added difficulty too punishing.

Perseverance Pays Off

When I first started Astral Flux, I found the combination of limited oxygen and steep difficulty intimidating, and it took multiple runs just to make it through the first planet. But as I persevered, I gradually learned to navigate each level more efficiently, finding shortcuts and adapting to the game’s mechanics. My persistence was rewarded as I advanced to more diverse and visually engaging planets. However, one drawback I noticed was that the starting planet never changes, which can become repetitive. Each run begins with the same desolate planet and similar worm-like enemies, which detracts from the excitement of replaying the game.

Diverse and Beautiful Pixelated Planets

At first, Astral Flux’s pixel art might seem typical of many indie games, but as you explore further, you’ll discover that the game offers a surprising amount of visual diversity. The starting planet is a barren, stone-covered landscape, but future levels introduce lush forests, underwater areas, and mechanical environments, each filled with unique flora and fauna. This variety adds a lot of visual appeal, keeping exploration fresh as you progress.

The game also boasts a fitting soundtrack that complements each environment. The sound effects, in particular, contribute to the immersion. You’ll hear leaves crunch underfoot in forested areas and splashes as you navigate water-filled sections, enhancing the game’s atmospheric quality. This attention to detail helps create a sense of mystery and isolation, making each planet feel distinct and immersive.

The Challenge of Minimalist Upgrades

Unlike many roguelikes where upgrades are frequent and impactful, Astral Flux takes a more restrained approach, with upgrades being rare and often challenging to obtain. This scarcity makes the few power-ups you do find feel more valuable, but it also means that players will need to rely heavily on their skills to progress. In each run, upgrades might add a double jump or increase your melee power, but you’re unlikely to gather enough upgrades in a single run to make your character feel significantly stronger. This design choice might frustrate players accustomed to roguelikes that offer constant upgrades and a steady sense of progression. However, those who enjoy a challenging, skills-based experience may find satisfaction in mastering the game’s demanding mechanics without the crutch of frequent upgrades.

Trial, Error, and Satisfaction

Astral Flux is a game that demands patience and persistence. With its limited oxygen mechanic, high difficulty, and sparse upgrades, it initially felt like an uphill battle. But as I continued to play, I found myself drawn to the challenge of optimizing my runs, learning the quirks of each planet, and improving my timing to make it through levels more efficiently. There’s a satisfying rhythm to the gameplay once you get the hang of it. That said, the game’s design choices might not resonate with all players. Some may find the difficulty too steep, especially given the limited opportunities for exploration and power-ups. Others may feel that repeating the same opening level dampens the excitement of replaying the game.

Conclusion: In Space, No One Can Hear You Play

In the end, I found myself enjoying Astral Flux, though I recognize that it won’t be for everyone. Its high entry difficulty, reliance on limited resources, and repetitive starting levels could be deal-breakers for more casual players or those looking for a game that rewards exploration. Some mechanics, like the runes, also feel underdeveloped, as they often make an already difficult game even harder without offering much reward in return. Additionally, the upgrade system might feel sparse compared to other roguelikes, making the progression feel slower and less immediate.

However, for players who appreciate a challenging, minimalist roguelike experience, Astral Flux can be a rewarding experience. I found the limited upgrades and tight oxygen system heightened the sense of vulnerability and urgency, leading to satisfying moments when I successfully navigated a challenging level. It’s a tough game, but if you’re up for the challenge, there’s a lot to appreciate. For those still unsure, the free demo, available on Switch and Steam, offers a good taste of what Astral Flux has to offer, try it, and see if this space adventure is right for you.
