Bubble Ghost Remake – Back from the Past

The word that comes to mind when describing Bubble Ghost Remake is unique. This 2D action-puzzle game challenges players to carefully guide a fragile bubble through hazardous levels using nothing but the breath of a ghost. A remake of a game originally released on microcomputers and the Game Boy, this version modernizes the experience while staying true to the spirit (pun intended) of the original. While I never played the classic, after watching footage of it, it’s clear that a lot of love has gone into this remake. If you’re looking for something different, challenging and rewarding, I highly recommend it.

A Haunting Return

You play as the ghost of Heinrich Von Schinker, a spirit who has returned to his castle home after the war, hoping to reunite with his wife. Upon entering, he becomes inexplicably attached to a mysterious bubble and takes it upon himself to protect it as he searches for his lost love. However, his journey won’t be easy; his former household pets and his own out-of-control inventions now roam the castle, posing a constant threat to the delicate bubble.

Bubble Ghost Remake presents its story like a nursery rhyme, using beautifully drawn comic book-style still panels to narrate Heinrich’s tale. While relatively simple, the story is heartfelt and effectively sets the tone for the adventure. The charming presentation makes it accessible to all audiences, adding an emotional layer to what could have otherwise been just another puzzle game.

Blowing with Precision

Bubble Ghost Remake has a fascinating gameplay concept. The goal is to blow your bubble carefully through each level, ensuring it reaches the exit without popping. If it touches a hazard or enemy, it bursts instantly, and you must restart the level from the beginning.

As the ghost, you can move freely through walls and obstacles, unaffected by the dangers that threaten your bubble. Your primary ability is blowing, and the strength of your breath is determined by how long you hold the action button. Mastering this mechanic is crucial, as many moments require precise, gentle puffs to navigate tight spaces. Orientation also plays a key role; you must manoeuvre Heinrich carefully to control the bubble’s movement in various directions, whether horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Though it may seem simple at first, the game quickly evolves into a complex puzzle experience. Some levels introduce interactive elements like fans, lightning, and electrical wires, which must be manipulated to clear a safe path for the bubble. There are even cleverly designed boss fights that revolve around the same core mechanic: blowing a bubble. Despite its minimalistic approach, Bubble Ghost Remake offers a gameplay experience unlike anything I’ve played before.

A Test of Patience

That being said, the game can be frustrating at times. Since the bubble popped so easily, there were moments when I was inches from the exit, only to make a tiny mistake and have to restart the entire level. The difficulty can feel punishing, especially in later stages where precision is key.

This is one of those games that requires patience and persistence. When frustration hit, I found it best to step away for a bit and return with a clear head. Players who lack patience or get easily annoyed by trial-and-error mechanics might struggle with Bubble Ghost Remake. However, for those who enjoy overcoming challenges, finally getting the bubble to safety is incredibly satisfying.

Ghostly Movement & Difficulty Options

The controls are simple but effective. Heinrich moves smoothly, and blowing mechanics feel precise, allowing for fine-tuned adjustments when guiding the bubble. If you find the game too difficult, there’s an easier mode that adds an assist function; Heinrich will automatically orient himself around the bubble, making navigation more manageable. This is especially useful during fast-paced sections that require quick adjustments.

On the other hand, if you love a challenge, there’s a harder mode to unlock. Speedrunners will also be pleased to know that Bubble Ghost Remake includes a dedicated speedrun mode, allowing players to perfect their runs and compete for top times.

Atmospheric & Beautifully Designed

The game’s presentation is excellent. Just like the hand-drawn comic book cutscenes, the in-game visuals have a beautifully illustrated style. Heinrich himself looks adorable and innocent, contrasting against the dark, ominous castle. Clever use of ambient sound enhances the eerie yet playful atmosphere; there are moments where the only sound is your breath echoing through the castle halls, making it feel like you’re truly in Heinrich’s ghostly shoes. The soundtrack is used sparingly but kicks in at the right moments to heighten the tension or create a sense of wonder.

Conclusion: Blew Me Away

Bubble Ghost Remake is a fantastic action-puzzle game that will appeal to players looking for something fresh and new. It takes a simple concept, blowing a bubble, and builds an entire experience around it, complete with puzzle-solving, precision movement, and even boss fights. The game’s charming art style, touching story, and rewarding challenge make it a great remake of a long-lost classic.

That said, this is not a game for everyone. If you lack patience or get easily frustrated, the trial-and-error gameplay might not be for you. However, for those who enjoy precision-based challenges and overcoming tricky obstacles, Bubble Ghost Remake is an absolute delight.

If you’re unsure, a free demo is available on Steam, and I highly recommend trying it out. As for me? I loved it.
