Help restore the Power of the Stars in Care Bears: Unlock the Magic.
I have reviewed several games which tie in with other media (for example, Dog Man: Mission Impawsible, and Hello Kitty Island Adventure) and with fond memories of my little Care Bear plushie, which I had when I was a child, will Care Bears: Unlock the Magic fill me with that same magic?
Care Bears: Unlock the Magic Pathway

There are two modes in Care Bears: Unlock the Magic: Adventure Mode or Free Mode. The Adventure Mode consists of eight mini-games (not the dozen mentioned in the eShop overview) played along a pathway. After each set of eight, there is a storm cloud which needs a set number of stars to clear it away. Stars are collected by completing a mini-game. The aim is to complete 70 mini-games and restore the Power of the Stars. There is little narrative, with no explanation as to how the Stars were lost. You can’t select which Care Bear helps in the mini-game, and they don’t display any unique characteristics.
The pathway consists of 13 sets of eight, so there is a maximum of 104 stars to collect in Adventure Mode. The great news is that you do not need to complete the levels for a specific mini-game in numerical order.

Free Mode allows you to play unlocked levels from Adventure Mode, with a bonus of 13 levels per game once you’ve restored the Power of the Stars.
Care Bear Mini-games

The mini-games feel familiar as they are inspired by classic arcade games like Frogger or Bubble Shooter, but, of course, they all have a Care Bear theme. The instructions are voiced, which makes them accessible, although there is no way to see/listen to them again. They also don’t explain all the nuances within the mini-games, for example, the explosion bubble in Care Bubbles – so there is an assumed knowledge, that not all gamers would have.

New mechanics are introduced into the mini-games as you progress through Care Bears: Unlock the Magic. It might be a ‘no-go’ block or different floor colouring in Conga (think the Care Bears version of Snake) or rotating rocks in Bouncy Heart (Flappy Bird with a Care Bear). It might take less time, more items to collect, or more obstacles to avoid.
My Gaming Buddy and I completed 103 of the 104 Adventure Mode levels, but try as we might the Conga level 12 evaded us (even though we could complete higher levels). The difficulty of the levels seem inconsistent, and with the controls not being reactive enough, the entertainment value decreases and it becomes frustrating.
Care Bear Art Book

You’ll collect a sticker for each storm cloud you remove, and this fills the first double spread in the Art Book. However, there were another 24 stickers to collect, and although I collected half a dozen more, I wasn’t totally sure what I had done to unlock them. You can zoom in on a sticker, but, disappointingly, there is no information about it.
Gameplay
The controls are straightforward, and the text is large enough to be seen in handheld mode. However, there is no touchscreen functionality, and for some of the games, especially at the higher levels, the controls were not as responsive as I needed them to be in either handheld or docked mode!
Although the game has a party feel, it is only a single player.
Care Bears: Unlock the Magic autosaves when a level is completed. There is only one save slot, but the game data can be deleted if you want to start anew.
Conclusion
Care Bears: Unlock the Magic did not rekindle any of the Care Bear magic I remember from childhood. Although the bright colours and bouncy music are enjoyable, the repetition of the same 8 mini-games quickly grows tiresome.
Ultimately, I’m not sure who the target audience is. I think, those who are inspired by the Care Bears: Unlock the Magic TV show, would find the levels get too difficult, too quickly. Those who would enjoy the challenge, would not be inspired by the theme.
I had high hopes for Care Bears: Unlock the Magic, but as it is…
Final Verdict: I’m Not Sure
