YOUR HOUSE is a mystery-thriller-type visual novel with escape room puzzles to solve in between story beats. You play a young girl who just turned eighteen and decides to take her life in a new direction.

A Story That Will Keep You Riveted

YOUR HOUSE follows our main character, Debbie. She’s a troublemaker, and she has been kicked out of more boarding schools than should be possible. Not afraid to lie, cheat, or steal, Debbie finds her life in school miserable. On the evening of her eighteenth birthday, she finds a key and a postcard with an address on it.

It’s time to ride to adventure.

At the address, she finds a home filled with puzzles and secrets. To figure out the mystery of the house and who sent her the key to it, Debbie has to solve each puzzle and dig the secrets out of the walls.

This story is fantastic and well-told. I quickly grew attached to Debbie, who was flawed and human and so very real to me. So when Debbie and I ended up trapped in an escape-room-style home, I was in heaven. A cool story with some interesting vibes, a creepy atmosphere, and a big mystery hidden behind puzzles sounds like a great time to me.

Visual Splendor in YOUR HOUSE

The screenshots can’t really do YOUR HOUSE justice. It has a beautiful, comic-book-like style that is fitting for the subject matter and the main character. The ambience, the sound design, the music, the pacing, and the puzzles all leave you on edge with a feeling of something terrifying right around the corner. It’s such a beautiful game that it’s almost impossible to describe.

A wall of text shows you what is happening in this room in YOUR HOUSE.
Most of the game is text like this, with Debbie needing to interact with that text to make things happen.

It has such a unique and interesting vibe. It’s a sort of spooky choose-your-own-adventure novel mixed with an incredibly story, a great main character, and a lot of love. You can tell how much work went into not only the puzzles, but also every single visual you came across. YOUR HOUSE was filled to the brim with style, and there is so much to love about this little indie game. It reminded me of Lorelei and the Laser Eyes as well as some of my favorite escape room games, like The Room games.

There is so much to love about this game that I’m having trouble getting all my thoughts down on paper. How does one describe love, a perfect sunset, or anything else of beauty without it sounding cliche? I think the last thing the world that YOUR HOUSE could be called is cliche: it’s hopeful, it’s spooky, it’s filled with heart and soul, and it’s completely unique. Be still my heart.

A clue!

The Cons of YOUR HOUSE

I had almost no issues with YOUR HOUSE. Some of the puzzles were really difficult, and I had to dive into the hints to get through them. However, there was one puzzle that really made me angry when I was playing it. There is a puzzle in which you have to change the time on a clock (I won’t spoil the answer or anything; don’t worry). I kept setting the clock over and over again, pretty sure I had the right time, but it wasn’t doing anything.

Turns out that the game won’t let you set it like a real clock. Instead of the minute hand pointing at the minutes and the hour hand pointing in between the hours, it was pointed directly at the number itself. So if you were to set a real clock to 10:30, for example, the minute hand would be on the six, and the hour hand would be halfway between the 10 and the 11, right?

Spying on the neighborhood.

I sat staring at the clock for about half an hour before my husband came over and immediately was like, “I know this is probably wrong, but have you tried pointing the hour hand at 10 instead of in between the numbers?” When that worked, I was so mad. The only other issue that some might have is that there is some cursing in the game, but not very often. I wouldn’t give this game to youngsters; the curse words don’t bother me, but they might trouble others some, so I thought I would put a warning in.

Other than that one puzzle, I didn’t have a single issue with YOUR HOUSE. I would love to see some more added in the future, like DLC or a second game in the same style. This was a great addition to my indie puzzle game collection, and I hope the developers made a million more of them.

Me too, Debbie. Me too.

Conclusion

What else can I say? I’m in love with YOUR HOUSE. I think it’s a stunning amalgamation of everything I love about good video games and good stories. It feels so good to play, so good to beat the puzzles, and is such an interesting story, I will be singing its praises to anyone who will listen for quite a while.

If you love puzzles, escape rooms, good stories, interesting visuals, and great vibes, you should pick up YOUR HOUSE for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up  Two thumbs up
