Crimson Waves on the Emerald Sea: Amaranthine Moon is an otome visual novel that follows young businesswoman Lucie, whose cure-for-vampirism venture is hindered by the sudden death of a business partner. Lucie’s path branches based on her choices between vampire and human as well as the three young men in her life.
New Treatment for Vampirism
The story of Crimson Waves on the Emerald Sea: Amaranthine Moon begins with Lucie, the young head vampire of her family, at the cusp of securing a business deal for her revolutionary treatment for vampirism using emerald gems. Her plans are halted by the sudden death of her gem supplier, followed by the rise of counterfeit gem scams as well as the mysterious deaths of two more prominent jewelers in the city. Tenacious and spunky, Lucie takes matters into her own hands and begins to investigate this string of incidents with the help of her brother, his husband, and her companions.

Lucie’s Love Interests
Otome games are known for their love interests, and this game doesn’t disappoint in this aspect. During the first few chapters of the common route, you are introduced to Lucie’s three potential suitors. First is Cecil (my personal choice), a shy business student like Lucie who is also the future heir to his parents’ mining conglomerate. He and Lucie have been friends since childhood and spend much of their time together. Next is a quiet and reserved classmate, Elm. He’s good friends with both Lucie and Cecil and frequently helps them with their studies. Finally, you meet Rowan, Elm’s mysterious twin brother, who is set to inherit their father’s jewellery business. Unlike Elm, Rowan is outwardly confident and charismatic, and even Lucie occasionally finds herself faltering in front of his flirtatious ways.

As Lucie’s investigations dig deeper into the activities of the gem counterfeit schemes, she will choose a partner for the rest of her story. Based on your previous choices, you will be locked into either the Cecil route, Elm route, or Rowan route, and the rest of the adventure will focus much more heavily on your chosen love interest, with the other two taking a backseat. I especially enjoyed seeing the Lucie and Cecil-specific CG artworks during my playthrough.
A Well-Polished Visual Novel Experience
Crimson Waves on the Emerald Sea: Amaranthine Moon delivers an enjoyable story wrapped in artwork and music that immerse players in the gothic, Victorian world of Lucie’s adventures. The character models are drawn in a crisp digital style pop on the screen when layered on top of rougher mosaic oiling painting-like background images. The UI designs also incorporate a classical gothic aesthetic and fit well with the story setting. Most of the musical tracks in this game also lean toward the classical style with instruments, such as piano and violin.

During my playthrough, I found only a couple minor typos and nothing that detracted from my enjoyment of Lucie and her adventures. Even though the sprites themselves aren’t animated, the character models are transitioned around the screen to give players the sense of movement. For example, I could feel Elm and Cecil walking across the screen as their sprites bounced with each step. I had a great experience with Cecil’s route, and I’m grateful for the skip function. Being able to quickly skip through previously seen text will be a huge timesaver when I play through Elm and Rowan’s routes in the future. There are also plenty of save slots in case you don’t want to restart your future playthroughs from the very beginning.

Conclusion
Overall, I really enjoyed my time with Lucie as we investigated the counterfeit gem scams and the jeweler murders together with Cecil in Crimson Waves on the Emerald Sea: Amaranthine Moon. I look forward to going back and experiencing the story again with Elm and Rowan too!
