Head Over Heels Deluxe – A Classic Returns
Head Over Heels is an isometric action-puzzle game originally released in 1987 on the ZX Spectrum. Those who remember the microcomputer boom may have fond memories of this quirky, inventive title. But for newcomers, this is a truly unique experience; Head Over Heels has a design that hasn’t really been replicated since its heyday. Now, with a new deluxe version, this cult classic has been given a fresh coat of paint while maintaining its signature challenge.
That challenge, by the way, is no joke. This game holds onto its retro difficulty, demanding patience, persistence, and serious problem-solving skills. But if you stick with it, you’ll uncover something special: a rewarding, brain-teasing adventure that feels just as inventive today as it did back then.
Breaking Out
Like many old-school games, Head Over Heels Deluxe throws you straight into the action with little explanation. If you didn’t read the manual back in the day (or, in this case, pause and read the scrolling text on the main menu), you might be a bit lost at first. The story is delightfully odd: you play as Head and Heels, two agents from the planet Freedom who are on a mission to overthrow the evil Blacktooth Empire. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned, and the duo is captured and imprisoned in Castle Blacktooth.
Separated at the start, the first goal is to escape and reunite. After that, you must travel to various planets to collect crowns, which will help bring down the empire. It’s a bizarre but charming setup, exactly the kind of quirky storytelling I remember fondly from classic games. There’s no excessive exposition, no lengthy cutscenes, just pure gameplay and a world that invites you to figure things out as you go.

Room to Room – A Test of Skill and Logic
The core of Head Over Heels revolves around puzzle-solving and platforming. Each character has unique abilities that play a crucial role in overcoming the game’s many challenges. The head is capable of jumping higher, gliding, and eventually shooting doughnuts with a special device. Heels, on the other hand, moves faster, can climb areas Head can’t, and is able to carry and drop objects. You’ll need to switch between them strategically and eventually combine them to progress through the game’s many puzzle rooms.
Each room presents a different challenge. Some require you to flip switches to manipulate objects, including one that looks suspiciously like King Charles III. Others demand careful movement to avoid enemies or hazards. The game rarely offers clear instructions, leaving you to figure things out through observation and experimentation. When you do finally solve a tricky puzzle, though, the sense of satisfaction is well worth it.
Controls & Movement – A Learning Curve
The controls in Head Over Heels Deluxe are precise but take some getting used to. The isometric perspective makes movement a bit tricky, especially when trying to judge jumps. Since the game provides no tutorial, it’s not immediately clear what each character is capable of, which may leave new players feeling slightly lost. However, the ability to remap controls in the options menu is a welcome addition that helps with accessibility.
Movement is fast, sometimes too fast. Touching an enemy or hazard results in instant death, sending you back to the start of the room. This can be frustrating, particularly when you lose multiple lives in quick succession simply because your momentum carried you forward. The game expects players to learn through trial and error, which is part of its retro charm but may test the patience of those unfamiliar with older gaming design philosophies.

A Classic Look with Modern Tweaks
The Deluxe version stays true to the spirit of the original while adding some welcome refinements. The isometric visuals have been updated with more colour and detail, giving the game a fresh look while retaining its old-school appeal. The soundtrack has also been updated, maintaining the distinct 8-bit charm while benefiting from improved audio quality.
Despite these enhancements, the isometric perspective remains a challenge to navigate. It’s not always clear which platforms are above or below you, leading to frustrating moments when you misjudge a jump. However, with patience and experience, the game’s visual quirks become easier to work around.
Extras – What’s New in Deluxe?
For returning fans, Head Over Heels Deluxe introduces several new features to enhance the experience. A brand-new world has been added, complete with new levels and enemies, offering fresh challenges even for those familiar with the original. The game now includes more save points in the form of fish you can collect, making it a bit more forgiving than its predecessor. There are also three difficulty options, allowing players to choose the level of challenge that suits them best. Additionally, the ability to adjust the movement speed of characters provides further customization, though even the “classic” setting feels quite fast.
These additions make this feel like the definitive version of Head Over Heels, but its additions still favour experienced players.

Conclusion – A Definitive Edition Worth Playing
Head Over Heels Deluxe is an odd but endearing experience, the kind of game that feels like an acquired taste but ultimately wins you over. Its unique characters and clever puzzles create an adventure that rewards patience and careful thinking. Playing it took me back to the golden days of gaming when creativity reigned supreme, and players were left to figure things out for themselves.
That said, it’s not for everyone. Casual players may feel lost, and the game’s trial-and-error nature can be frustrating at times. But for fans of the original or anyone who loves retro-style puzzle-platformers, this is the definitive version of a classic.
