The Premise of LAN Party Adventures

In LAN Party Adventures, we are looking for a missing friend while setting up LAN parties all over town. We connect cables, install software, connect modems to the internet, and solve puzzles, all the while looking for our friend.

Now, a bit of back story, in case you’ve never heard the sweet song of a dial-up modem connecting to the internet, and have no idea what a LAN party is. A LAN party is a gathering of people at a single location, each bringing their own computer or compatible game console. The goal is to connect all devices in a local area network (LAN) via a router or switch to play multiplayer video games together. It is not the same as an Internet cafe, where you use the cafe’s computers. The LAN parties are more of a private event that requires more planning and parents’ cooperation. While LAN parties were at their peak during the late 1990s to early 2000s, when broadband internet access was either unavailable or too expensive, there has been a resurgence in popularity for LAN parties in recent years. Nowadays, LAN parties are less about low-speed internet and more about the social aspect of playing games with friends. Of course, setting it up with handhelds or laptops is also much easier than lugging around the heavy computers of old.

Gameplay

LAN Party Adventures is a classic first-person point-and-click puzzle adventure game with elements of a job simulation game. The game features two modes: Story mode, where we set up LAN parties at various locations while investigating what’s happening in our small town, and Sandbox mode, where we create LAN parties in our own unique style. In Sandbox mode, we can choose between six different locations, and we have access to all the furniture, decorations, devices, and cables we encounter in the Story mode of the game.

Whether we play in story mode or sandbox mode, the setup process for a computer is the same – we have an Inventory and shortcuts for all the cables at the bottom of the screen. When we find a port, for example, an internet port, if we have the correct cable, the port is green, and if not, it’s red. Connecting, installing, and all other actions are performed with the left mouse button.

Without a doubt, the strongest draw of LAN Party Adventures is the inclusion of 2000s Tech and nostalgia – we have to connect VGA cables, manage speeds, avoid viruses, use the command prompt, connect to the internet, and use a real dial-up modem. Everything, from the main menu of the game to the in-game computer interface, is styled in a retro computer aesthetic.

Even the mystery is reminiscent of early 2000s mystery content, such as The X-Files, but with a more family-friendly tone. The story is told through a mix of comic book cutscenes, emails, phone calls, secret documents, and web surfing, among other methods.

The game includes numerous puzzles, which are integrated when we attempt to connect cables or install software. In some cases, the puzzles work well. In other cases, especially when it’s something we do numerous times during a level, such as connecting an Ethernet cable, the mini-game becomes tedious.

And speaking of tedious, I was very annoyed with the cable management – all cables have different lengths, but you don’t see the length until you actually equip the cable. I’m not sure if it was bad luck on my part, but not once did cable management go smoothly for me. I also got stuck around furniture a few times and had some trouble moving objects around.

In fact, in terms of experience and atmosphere, LAN Party Adventures heavily reminded me of another adventure game from this year – The Roottrees are Dead.

That’s a bad password.

Some Other Things

LAN Party Adventures has a demo available on its Steam page. The game features Steam achievements, but does not yet support Trading Cards.

The game has basic audio and video settings.

Conclusion

LAN Party Adventures is a promising game with some issues. While I was occasionally annoyed, I ultimately don’t regret my time playing LAN Party Adventures. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane, but I also appreciated the story and its characters.

Final Verdict: I Like it a LotI like it a lot
