Misc. A Tiny Tale takes us into a world where your character, Buddy the robot, is tiny compared to the everyday objects all around you. A concept that has been used in movies (Honey, I shrunk the Kids)  and video games like Pikmin and Chibi Robo, but it never fails to intrigue me.

The developers mentioned that their game is indeed inspired by Chibi Robo, which is clear to see. That little robot has starred in some excellent games in the past, like Chibi Robo on Gamecube, Park Patrol on DS and Okaeri, Chibi Robo! that had a Japanese release only on DS. Somehow Nintendo doesn’t use that IP to the fullest, even though the pint-sized character has a dedicated fan base. So, excellent that developer Tinyware Games picks up the ball and runs with it!

Buddy and Bag Boy On a Mission

In Misc. A Tiny Tale we follow two robots, Buddy and Bag Boy, who are on a mission to find out what’s going on outside their little world. Bag Boy feels as if he doesn’t fit in anyway and doesn’t have any friends, aside from his companion cat Flick and Buddy. After a mysterious explosion disrupts their home, it’s time to pack up and travel beyond the borders and venture into the first chapter, The Garden Village.

The explosion has scattered golden cogs and trash across the land, and while taking control of Buddy, it’s your job to scrub and collect nuts and golden cogs. Along the way you meet quirky robot inhabitants of each area, and by helping them, they help you acquire the shiny golden cogs that you need to progress. You will find the most unexpected things, like buried treasure that turns out to be shiny bottle caps which in turn make another robot happy, a paperclip that works perfectly as your tool/weapon and an iron bar that can be used by a robot called Herculas that loves nothing better than weight lifting.

I was glad to help these beetle-like robots to become bro’s for life

Buddy is guided by Sign Guy who leaves mysterious notes and instructions, kept in place by clothing pins. He’s not sure who exactly is behind them, but they sure are helpful, pointing Buddy towards his jumping and diving ability.

Helping Others Out and Lite Platforming

Every object you find can potentially be used to help another robot out, which in turn leads to a new object, which can lead to the coveted golden cogs that you need to open the gate to the next area. The gameplay consists of exploring and a little bit of fighting, as you have to rid some areas of Wind-Ups that a mysterious creature is dropping from his UFO-like flying machine. For the exploring part you do need a bit of platforming skills: jumping and gliding at the right time to reach higher areas. I’m never very good at that, but I’m managing!

That’s one angry looking robot in that UFO

For example, an area Buddy calls The Schorched Kingdom is an abandoned playground full of buckets, little shovels and sand castles like a child would make. The umbrellas (the kind we get in a nice cocktail) can be deployed as jumping devices and there’s a broken sieve that you can drop through to explore the area below.

But Misc. A Tiny Tale isn’t just about going to and fro to solve little quests. The narrative is often sweet, sometimes silly and it’s always a wonder what imaginative things will come up next. You can exchange all the trash you pick up for coins at the Recycotron, and you are rewarded for your efforts to rid nature of unwanted objects with points called ‘Difference Made’.

The Recycotron in Misc.A Tiny Tale is a shiny, mechanical recycling bin with robotic limbs. It evaluates items and informs the player they’ve earned 8 coins. The setting includes giant playing cards and dice. Published on: LadiesGamers
Nice that you get coins for trash!

Controls, Graphics and More

Misc. A Tiny Tale has been developed with the Nintendo Switch primarily in mind, after which a Steam version was added. This means the game is a joy playing it on the Steam Deck, using exactly the same buttons. I haven’t played it on PC, so I couldn’t say if it works as well using mouse and keyboard.

Graphically, Misc. A Tiny Tale has the same charm as Chibi Robo has. It’s fascinating to see how everyday objects can turn into a large item with details you don’t normally notice. Everything is colourful and beautifully intricate.

Beautifully detailed, Buddy in the Garden

Every area has its own music in the background. It can get a bit repetitive if you are stuck trying to find the golden cogs, but it is very nice that it fits the areas so well.

I’m prone to motion sickness when playing a first person game, but though Misc. A Tiny Tale is third person, it still makes me a bit queasy after playing for a bit, so I had to take it in short spurts.

Conclusion for Misc. A Tiny Tale

While Chibi Robo seems to have sadly faded into the background, Misc. A Tiny Tale feels like a hopeful continuation of its legacy. And it’s not just a nostalgic nod, it’s a lovingly crafted adventure in its own right, with a modern polish and a heartfelt message.

Buddy has to beat these wind-ups with his paperclip!

The game plays smoothly on the SteamDeck and probably equally smooth on the Switch. Misc. A Tiny Tale celebrates the joy of helping others and finding wonder in exploration and finding the small things: they might seem unimportant but not so to someone out there!

Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up!Two thumbs up
