A demo code was used, with many thanks to Rablo Games.
Necro Story, a light-hearted RPG for PC, is being developed by Rablo Games, the same developer who brought us Healer’s Quest on the Nintendo Switch, which I reviewed in 2021; you can find that review here.
Like Healer’s Quest, Necro Story is shaping up to be a fun RPG experience coming to Steam later this year, offering a fresh twist on the genre with its unique blend of humour, dark magic, and strategic gameplay. In this demo, you step into the shoes of a somewhat malevolent Necromancer, accompanied by the spirit of a whimsical white mage. Together, they embark on a mission to infiltrate the Underworld and save humanity.
Necromancy Spells and Skills in Necro Story

One of the great features of Necro Story is its list of necromancy spells. The game will have over 20 spells to master; you can tailor your magical arsenal to suit your preferred playstyle. Whether you favour direct damage, debuffs, or raising hordes of skeletons to overwhelm your foes, there’s something for every aspiring dark wizard.
The game will offer an in-depth skill tree system, allowing you to invest in various abilities and upgrades. This customisation extends beyond just the character you control, as you can also tweak the skills and equipment of all your party members. This level of detail ensures that each playthrough can feel unique, encouraging experimentation with different builds and strategies as you play through the Necro Story demo and the game once it’s released.
Dark Pacts and Transformations

Signing Dark Pacts with demons is another interesting mechanic. These pacts grant powerful transformations, allowing players to take on the forms of mighty demons. These transformations add a layer of strategic depth, as they can drastically change the flow of battles and provide temporary boosts that can turn the tide in challenging encounters.
In the Necro Story demo, you can also capture fallen enemies and add them to your team. This mechanic turns every battle into an opportunity to recruit new allies, each with their own unique abilities and strengths. The idea that “all enemies can be captured and used in your team” adds a Pokemon-esque element to the game, blending familiar RPG combat with a collector’s mindset.
Narrative and Humour

While the game’s premise might sound dark, Necro Story balances its necromantic themes with a light-hearted narrative. I’ve had some laugh-out-loud moments at some of the interactions between the Necromancer and the ghostly white mage, and they inject a lot of humour and fun into the storyline. This contrast between dark magic and playful dialogue helps create a unique atmosphere that sets Necro Story apart from other RPGs.
Visuals and Sound

The demo’s art style is colourful and vibrant, bringing its dark fantasy world to life without becoming overly grim. The character designs are distinct and memorable, with each enemy and ally having a unique appearance that reflects their abilities and lore. In the demo, I thought the environment was sparse; there were not many things to interact with within the environment. Hopefully, that will change before the game is released.
The soundtrack complements the visual style perfectly, with music that ranges from eerie and atmospheric to upbeat and adventurous. I mostly played the game on my Steam Deck, and it ran perfectly on it; I also tried it out on my laptop and had the same results.

Final Thoughts
Necro Story’s demo showcases a promising RPG filled with plenty of humour and strategic gameplay. Its mix of necromancy, customisation, and light-hearted narrative offers a refreshing take on the genre.
You can find the Necro Story demo here; it’s available to download during the Steam Next Fest; if you like it, consider adding the game to your Wishlist.
