What is Relooted about?

Relooted is a political puzzle adventure unlike anything I’ve played before.
Here, you build a team to retrieve real-life African artifacts displayed in museums and private “collections” around the world, and return them to where (and with whom) they truly belong. Yes. We’re talking about restitution. Yes. We’re talking about history. And yes… we’re doing it through an Afrofuturistic heist.

Are you ready?

Accessibility or Who gets to join the heist

Before diving into the action, let’s take a quick look at the settings, because the team clearly put thought into accessibility.

You can adjust controller vibration, camera intensity, and enable a Parkour Highlight feature that helps you identify interactive objects and escape routes. A very welcome addition when you’re mid-heist and under pressure. Subtitles are enabled by default (you can turn them off), and the font size is adjustable.
There’s also a colorblind mode supporting three types of color vision deficiency (still rare enough to be worth highlighting), contrast calibration and optional automatic camera rotation.

Would I say absolutely everyone can play Relooted? Probably not. But it’s clear the developers made a genuine effort to remove as many barriers as possible. And that deserves recognition.
You can also choose between four difficulty modes: Story, Balanced (the game’s intended experience), Intense, and Relentless. If you’ve read my previous reviews, you already know that I went with Story Mode.

Gameplay or How I Became an Afrofuturistic Mastermind

We begin as Nomali, who receives an SOS from her brother, Trevor. What follows is a cinematic opening that transitions into a parkour escape sequence, both a narrative hook and a smooth tutorial phase.
Once Trevor is safe, Nomali discovers the secret work he and someone dear to her have been involved in.
That’s when the real adventure begins.

Sister to the rescue!

Each mission revolves around infiltrating heavily guarded locations to retrieve specific artifacts. Before entering, you strategize, where to position your accomplices, which routes to open and how to secure your escape. Sometimes you stick strictly to the target.

Sometimes… an extra treasure might “accidentally” fall into Nomali’s very convenient bag.
Each artifact unlocks detailed historical, spiritual, and artistic information (optional, but incredibly valuable).

A bit of history between runs

The amount of research behind these entries is impressive, and it elevates the game beyond pure entertainment.

At the end of every mission, Trevor gives you a performance review (yes, ironic). You’re evaluated on artifacts retrieved, time and efficiency.

You can replay missions anytime via the Artifact Library if you want to improve your score.
Story Mode includes a thoughtful feature: if you fail repeatedly, the game allows you to either retry or skip ahead while still obtaining the story-critical artifacts. I didn’t end up using it, but I was tempted.
Some of those museums felt more like labyrinthine prisons. I genuinely wondered how the guards weren’t getting lost themselves!

Beyond the Heists

Relooted isn’t just about high-stakes missions. Nomali also takes on smaller tasks around Johannesburg, South Africa. Delivering goods. Helping locals. Reconnecting with old friends.

A stop at the coffee shop

These quieter moments allow you to explore the city and deepen your relationships with the cast. They give emotional grounding to the political stakes of the story. And that balance works beautifully.

The Look and Feel of Relooted

Visually, Relooted is stunning. Colors burst across the screen. Textures feel rich.
The Afrofuturistic aesthetic, blending advanced technology with African cultural design, is executed with confidence and care.

The team’s headquarters

The artifacts themselves are faithfully represented based on their real-world counterparts, which reinforces the educational layer of the experience. And fashion-wise? Professor Grace is that girl.

The soundtrack, composed by two artists, is immersive without overpowering the gameplay. It supports the tension during missions and softens during exploration phases.
The characters are fully voiced, adding personality and presence to every scene. While I can’t personally verify the linguistic accuracy of each accent, there’s a clear diversity in rhythm and tone that adds authenticity.

Conclusion

I loved playing Relooted. It’s an intelligent blend of adrenaline, puzzle-solving, and real-world historical awareness. Few games dare to tackle restitution and colonial legacy through gameplay, and even fewer manage to make it engaging without trivializing the subject. Relooted succeeds. It made me think.
It made me strategize. And yes, it fulfilled a dream I didn’t know I had: living out an Afrofuturistic heist fantasy.

A demo is currently available on Steam. If the stars align, I highly recommend giving it a try.
See you on the run!

Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up Two thumbs up
