Roombattle vacuums doing battle

Roombattle Demo Impressions

A demo code was provided, and many thanks to Dust Games.

Roombattle: A Reminder of the Importance of Fun With Loved Ones

Roombattle is a competitive party game for up to six players, where you take control of a vacuum cleaner and compete against others to come out on top. It feels like the kind of idea that could come from sitting in a living room, looking around, and rolling with whatever inspiration strikes, much like turning couch cushions into an impromptu obstacle course for “the floor is lava.” After playing the demo, Roombattle proves to be a chaotic and entertaining party experience that is easy to pick up and enjoy with friends or family, no matter their gaming experience.

Start Your Vacuums

The current demo features a single game mode: a battle mode reminiscent of Mario Kart’s balloon battle. Each player starts with three balloons attached to their vacuum, and the goal is simple: pop your opponent’s balloons while protecting your own. Movement is handled with the analogue stick, and you have a boost button that grants a quick burst of speed, which can be charged for an even stronger push. If you’re short on controllers, keyboard controls are also available.

The game keeps things accessible with easy-to-understand instructions presented on a simple loading screen, making it ideal for casual players and even complete newcomers. Who knows? Maybe you can even convince your grandparents to join in at your next family gathering!

Causing Chaos

Winning isn’t just about popping balloons. Each level starts as a clean, organized room, but you’re encouraged to turn it into a complete disaster. You can knock over fish tanks, smash windows, send chairs flying, and create general havoc. It’s the kind of satisfying destruction you might wish you could unleash after a long day but without the real-world consequences of cleaning up afterwards.

As you wreak havoc, power-ups appear, offering temporary advantages like slowing down opponents. Even if victory seems out of reach, the sheer fun of causing chaos keeps the experience entertaining.

Every two rounds, the game spices things up with a mini-game, such as competing to pop the most balloons that drop into the room. The winner of these mini-games earns a small permanent buff, like an extra balloon, to carry into the next round. Matches in the demo are short, lasting under five minutes, which feels just right for quick, engaging sessions. If the formula clicks with your group, you’ll likely find yourself playing round after round.

Customize Your Vacuum

Visually, Roombattle is bright, colourful, and family-friendly. The levels are modelled after different rooms in a house, filled with furniture and objects to knock over. One small detail I particularly enjoyed was the dust trails left behind when using the boost feature, you can even clean them up afterward if you feel like it!

A standout feature is the ability to customize your vacuum. You can change its colour, add a hat, and even choose the object it uses to pop balloons. So, if you’ve ever wanted a cowboy-hat-wearing vacuum armed with a pencil (because the pencil is mightier than the sword), this game has you covered.

Final Thoughts

The Roombattle demo offers a small but promising glimpse of what’s to come when the full game releases in 2025. It delivers wholesome, chaotic fun that’s perfect for playing with friends or family. The final version promises additional game modes and online multiplayer, expanding the experience further.

One notable absence in the demo is AI bots, meaning you’ll need at least one other person to play with. As with most party games, the more players, the better; the added chaos only enhances the fun. However, even with just two players, I had a great time making a mess.

If you’re looking for an entertaining, easy-to-pick-up party game, I’d recommend checking out the free demo on Steam. It’s a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
