Rover’s Tale has resurfaced with a new name and a fresh demo on Steam. You might know the game as Good Boy and of course, it’s still a creature‑collecting, metroidvania type game.
In Rover’s Tale you’re dropped onto Terra II, a planet that feels familiar until it suddenly isn’t. Biomes swing from gentle forests to boggy swamps and icy ridges, and the upgrades you pick up, along with the creatures you capture, seem to shape how you move through each space. The whole thing is framed around the LAIKA Programme, which has given old dogs a second life as robotic Rovers.
Your Human explorer crash‑lands, sends out an S.O.S., and accidentally wakes a dormant Rover. From there, you’re effectively a duo, poking around ecosystems that feel alive, meeting other Rovers, and piecing together what happened on this strange world. The creatures you collect have their own quirks and abilities, harness these to overcome obstacles and expand the world or bring them back to Homebase where they can be scanned for Research Credits.
There’s a social thread running through it too. The Human follows a 24‑hour routine that shifts as the story unfolds, and the bond between them and the Rovers looks like it’ll carry a lot of emotional weight. Rebooting canine companions, completing their quests, and uncovering their memory tapes gives the adventure a personal edge.
Customisation is also part of the game. New tools, motherboard tweaks, and there’s a wardrobe of Rover cosmetics if you want to roam Terra II in style.
If you’re curious, the demo for Rover’s Tale is available now on Steam, giving you an early look before the full release lands.
