In a market flooded with word games, it takes a twist to stand out. Sixty Words by POWGi describes itself as a game where there is” no grid, no word list and no wrong letters,  just 60 intertwined words for you to paint while you create blended colour art.” As someone with a penchant for both words and colors, this is a satisfying premise. So is Sixty Words as calm and satisfying as it sounds? Let’s find out!

60 Words, 60 Themes

Sixty Words by POWGI LadiesGamers
The title screen features a wealth of themed puzzles.

Not only are there 60 words in each level, but there are also 60 levels total, each with its own theme. Words are (sometimes) configured into a shape that suits the theme, such as a music note for “Face The Music” and a sailboat for “Rock The Boat,” whereas other levels look like featureless blobs.

The beauty of having themes is that you can choose whatever suits your personal tastes and interests. For example, you may not know about legato or pizzicato if you’ve never picked up an instrument, but perhaps you know cake terminologies like fondant, angel, and sponge. Chances are a word puzzle here suits your fancy, but specialized themes also limit the longevity of Sixty Words. Once you’re finished, you’re finished. There are no auto-generated puzzles.

Painting Rainbows

A customizable color slider.

In a menu, you can change the “loop color.” This refers to the highlighter used when locating words. Additionally, you can use Dark mode, design a custom color palette, and mute the background music depending on your preferences. These options provide more agency than your typical word game. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t satisfying to paint rainbows with every word I discovered.

No Grid, No Wrong Letters

A musical composition.

It should be noted that Sixty Words has proper nouns, and it also eliminates spacing between separate words by turning them into compound words (“friedeggs” for example.) I found this somewhat frustrating, especially because I would select part of the word only for it not to register. After familiarizing myself with the internal logic of Sixty Words, this phenomenon became less disorienting, but it’s still unusual.

A feast for the eyes.

Conclusion: The Final Word

So is Sixty Words worth your time? It’s a relaxing low-stakes game that you can play after a long day. With specially crafted levels, it lacks replayability but it also doesn’t overstay its welcome. While it could have done more to stand out in an oversaturated market, it does have an undeniable human touch, courtesy of its charming themes and arrangements. Perhaps it’s a tad pricey when you can find similar games for free, but if you’re searching for a word search on Switch, then you might as well pick this one up.

Final Verdict: I Like It.
