Subnautica 2 Surfaces on 14 May with Co‑Op Added

Subnautica 2 is officially launching into Early Access on 14 May, with developer Unknown Worlds confirming a 4pm BST release on PC and Xbox Series X|S.

Priced at £25.99 / €29,99, the Early Access version marks the beginning of a longer development journey, following the same evolving model used for the original game.

A New World to Explore

This sequel is set on an entirely new alien ocean planet, moving away from Planet 4546B and its familiar landmarks. While specific biome details are still being kept close to the chest, Unknown Worlds has confirmed that the new setting will introduce unfamiliar creatures, environments, and survival challenges.

Expanded systems promise more depth in crafting, base building, and exploration as development progresses, with additional content planned throughout Early Access.

Co‑op Joins the Dive

For the first time in the series, Subnautica 2 includes optional four‑player online co‑op. You can still explore solo, but the addition allows shared base building and coordinated expeditions into deeper waters, representing a notable shift for a franchise traditionally focused on isolation.

Unknown Worlds has described this mode as fully integrated rather than a side feature, though the studio has noted that co‑op, like much of the game, will continue to evolve during Early Access.

A Cinematic First Look

To accompany the announcement, a new cinematic trailer has been released. Rather than walking through systems, it focuses on tone and atmosphere. Sweeping underwater vistas give way to moments of tension as new tools and vehicles appear mid‑scene, and fellow explorers are gradually threatened by unfamiliar alien life.

It’s a mood‑setting introduction rather than a gameplay deep dive, but one that stays true to the series’ mix of wonder and unease.

How This Fits the Series So Far

While LadiesGamers of course has not yet reviewed Subnautica 2, we did review the original Subnautica in 2021. In her review, CJ highlighted its emphasis on discovery, careful resource management, and learning through observation rather than instruction. That design philosophy appears to remain an important foundation for the sequel.
