The free public demo for Talystro is available on Steam, giving players an early look at the upcoming roguelite deckbuilder from Norwegian studio Filiokus. The full game is currently planned for release later in 2026.
Mina participated in the play-test a couple of months ago, and wrote down her first impressions:
It’s fun, it’s polished, the music and sound design are good, the animations are amazing, and it’s a great game to play. I want a lot more of it, and I can’t wait for the full release. If you like Slay the Spire-type games, you will like Talystro.
Talystro centres its combat around mathematics, casting you as the so‑called Math Mouse facing the Necrodicer and an army of corrupted numbers. Dice rolls, cards, and arithmetic form the backbone of every encounter.
Arithmetic‑Driven Combat
Rather than reducing enemies through repeated damage, Talystro asks you to match an enemy’s exact numerical value to defeat it. Cards contain unfinished equations, variables, and modifiers, while dice rolls shape the options available each turn.
Progress appears to hinge on understanding the order of operations and adapting to changing probabilities, with each fight framed more like a calculation puzzle than a traditional battle.

What the Demo Includes
The demo drops you into the Wildlands, the game’s first act, for a complete run of seven levels, ending with a boss fight. Filiokus estimates a full run lasts around 45 minutes, with Normal and Expert modes available from the start.
Across each run, you unlock new cards, upgrades, and artefacts, with some progression carrying over between attempts.
Talystro uses a hand‑drawn, frame‑by‑frame animation style, which has been expanded for the public demo. Full music and sound design are now in place, building on earlier closed builds.
The demo is described as accessible by design, with no time pressure or camera movement, encouraging slower, more thoughtful play.
