Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III – July 11th
The legendary bubble dragons Bub and Bob are back… in human form!? In this critically acclaimed TAITO classic, available on modern consoles for the first time, the now-transformed Bubby and Bobby embark on a mission to save their neighbouring planets. But this time, instead of blowing bubbles, our favourite duo swings colourful parasols filled with magical powers. Use parasols as a shield against enemy projectiles or stun, and pick up and throw foes as projectiles themselves!
Parasol Stars, released in 1991 as the sequel to Rainbow Islands, marks the third instalment in TAITO’s massively successful Bubble Bobble series of action platformers and has lost none of its colourful charms throughout the years.
James reviewed the game, and wrote in conclusion:
Overall, this is easily the best way to enjoy Parasol Stars on modern systems. For me, it’s probably not the strongest game in the Bubble Bobble trilogy. But in no way dismisses all the elements this game gets right. It is an upbeat action arcade game that you can enjoy alone or with a loved one. An art style that explodes positivity. And, of course, a few quality-of-life improvements to make this version of the game welcoming to old and new fans alike. If it’s raining outside, consider your next retro gaming session sorted.
DROS – July 12th
DROS is a dark fantasy adventure where you’ll swap between a small gooey creature and her human bounty hunter shell. Explore freely through 40 unique diorama-like levels filled with strange characters, intricate puzzles, hidden rooms, and ancient collectables.
Prepare to body swap! Wiggle, jiggle, and sneak around as the gooey Little Dros. Bust open hefty doors, press down pressure plates and clear the way as the robust Captain. But beware… each of the Tower’s 40 levels has its own unique surprises! Obstacles galore await you. Flex both brainpower and muscle to solve puzzles, fend off creepy creatures, piece together alchemical treasures, and uncover a tapestry of stories.
Paula reviewed DROS, liked it a lot and wrote in conclusion:
Dros is a fun and enjoyable game. I had a blast with the gameplay and puzzled my way to the exits. It is a timeless tale of two characters joining forces and discovering their similarities, and it is well executed. The combination of stealthy manoeuvres as you play as Dros and then the brute force of the Captain, all paired with great presentation, makes this game a memorable and enjoyable experience.
Shy Dogs Hidden Orchestra – July 12th
Shy Dogs Hidden Orchestra is a hidden object game where you need to find musician dogs who are embarrassed to play their music. When you find them, they will play songs for you. Another Hidden Orchestra will be on tour! The puppies are clumsy, but they are musical!
The Shy Dogs Hidden Orchestra is a hidden object game with musical elements. It’s a sequel to the game Shy Cats Hidden Orchestra, where each hidden character found unlocks a new musical instrument inside each game’s level. Thus, you’ll be able to create your own songs as you find cute little dogs hidden by beautiful 2D cartoon backgrounds.
Lynne searched for all the shy dogs, and wrote in her conclusion:
If you enjoy finding objects, Shy Dogs Hidden Orchestra is a great game to add to your collection. The cute puppies and glorious landscapes, together with no timer and all the worlds available at the start, make for an enjoyable experience.
The added twist of solving a puzzle to unlock the final shy dog adds an extra challenge. If frustration sets in at finding those last few pups, conduct your collected puppies to play a pleasant tune instead!
Let’s School – July 15th
In Let’s School, you play the role of a principal tasked with revamping and managing your alma mater! The game features two core mechanics: building and designing the school and managing the dynamics of students and teachers.
Each student has unique interests and aspirations, making your role as headmaster more complex. Balancing factors like your school’s reputation, satisfying students’ basic needs, overseeing academic pressure, and managing aspects like clothing, food, and travel provide an immersive and challenging experience. Aside from the usual responsibilities of a headmaster, you are also tasked with managing various issues that originate outside the school, including mysterious dangers and potential threats that might cause things to go bananas!
Paula reviewed the game when it was out on Steam, and wrote in her conclusion:
Pathea Games’ first steps into the simulation genre with Let’s School have turned out pretty well. It’s a deep and approachable school management game that’s enjoyable to play and includes plenty of content to keep you customising and playing while building up your school’s reputation.
SCHiM – July 18th
SCHiM is a game about jumping from shadow to shadow while interacting in a relaxing and lively environment.
What is a schim? A schim is the soul and spirit of an object, thing, or living being. Everything in the world has one. A schim should never be separated from their thing! This happens to your schim; this schim, who is attached to a human being, is separated from them early on in the game.
Anni reviewed SCHiM and wrote in her conclusion:
SCHiM is truly a fascinating game concept that seamlessly blends platforming, exploration, and puzzles to deliver an incredibly engaging and thought-provoking experience. The way it intertwines these elements creates a captivating and immersive world for players to get lost in. You can expect to be challenged and entertained in equal measure as you navigate through this unique and innovative game. The only thing that knocks it down a rating for me is purely the frequent crashes I experienced.
The Star Named EOS – July 23rd
The Star Named EOS is a story-rich puzzle adventure built around photography. Explore a beautiful hand-drawn world as you photograph some of the most precious yet fleeting moments in life. As you recreate photos from the past, you will slowly uncover the truth of a family mystery, and the love hidden within fragmented memories will eventually become clear.
Tokyo Xanadu eX+ – July 25th
Tokyo changed the lives of its inhabitants forever. The city has since been rebuilt, and life has slowly returned to a semblance of normalcy.
However, behind the veil of this newly rebuilt metropolis lies another world, one with a sinister secret. The earthquake that originally destroyed Tokyo was actually caused by the emergence of a mysterious and lethal shadow world known as Eclipse. Now, action must be taken to thwart the legions of Eclipse and ensure the protection of peace!
Margaret reviewed the game, liked it a lot and wrote in her conclusion
Combat has enough variables to keep you busy with a streamlined palette of options, although there will be a bit of a skill hurdle for those taking on their first game of this type. But with no downside to tweaking the difficulty and tons of resources available for you to use, the game genuinely feels like it wants you to succeed at playing it, which is going to be refreshing to anyone who has friends fighting their way through the Elden Ring expansion.
Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure – July 25th
Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure follows the story of Jemma, a small-town misfit on a journey of self-discovery. Venturing out beyond her stiflingly cosy confines, she finds an inspiring world – but also one ruled by fear and a strange, immovable ‘static’ force. Can she disrupt a culture of stagnation and find a place to fit into it?
Gameplay takes place on a unique, interconnected ‘grid’ that spans the entire world, snappily uniting movement, exploration, and combat. When Jemma moves, the world moves with her – creating both a playful sense of chaos and a regular stream of small, thoughtful puzzles that twist and play with the central mechanic.
Paula gave Arranger our highest score, writing in conclusion:
Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure is a game focused on the core experience of exploration and puzzle-solving. It brings a refreshing twist to the RPG genre. Its innovative grid system, storytelling, and visuals make it a standout title for me on the Nintendo Switch.
The game’s unique approach to movement, exploration, and combat, combined with its story, ensures that it will leave a lasting impression on players. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or new to the genre, Arranger is an adventure worth embarking on.
