Yoshi’s Crafted World – Demo Impressions

Yoshi’s Crafted World the latest Yoshi game will release next month on the 29th of March. A demo version that has the first level released just after the latest Nintendo Direct. It follows a similar style to Yoshi’s Wooly World. Now instead of just yarn there are all sorts of craft materials to make up the environment.

Yoshi Could Always Draw A Crowd

This demo contains the first level, as well as the flip side and a scavenger hunt. The game play is the same standard of turning enemies into eggs and then using those eggs as weapons or to hit far away things he can’t touch. There are various pick ups such as coins, Yoshi coins and Smiley Flowers. Given these games are about collectables there is no timer. So I can take my time hitting every possible object in the background.

The egg throwing is now controlled by you as you can throw eggs in front or behind. Which means you can throw eggs at the Shy Guy’s balloons to make them lose their purpose in life. It does have the same mellow mode as the last game although given it’s the first level you won’t need to bother with it.

Stylistically it’s gorgeous with the crafted aesthetic. Seeing painted over milk cartons, tape and felted creatures is a delight. I would say it comes out a lot better than Wooly World.

On The Flip Side

After beating the level a few Poochy Pups will run away. If you decide to catch them you’ll get to play the Flip Side of the course. This is where the camera is turned around and you go backwards through the course. It’s very neat to see the other side, and what you might’ve missed the first time. With the hide and seek game you won’t get smileys for getting collectables.

After that a character asks you to collect some cows for them. Going back into the level you can collect the five cows and exit it as soon as you’re done. Smileys and Yoshi Coins don’t add up but you can grab extra coins by going through the same levels again.

Overall

Before the demo released I was considering skipping it. Since the direct I’ve been interested in the Labo and other costumes. The full version will have co-op and perhaps this time my sister will be more interested in it than the last one.

A slightly enhanced version of Wooly World was released on Nintendo 3DS.

  1. Not sure I’ve ever played a Yoshi game all the way through, but I really enjoyed the demo. The new Mario game that came out recently isn’t really cutting it for me and this might be a better option for a platformer when the mood strikes. Love the artstyle of these games!
