Time to sit down for another YvoCaro plays: as always, these are about the video games I’m playing. These thoughts just spring up in my mind, sometimes game related, sometimes they are not.
It’s only fair to warn you that spoilers might be ahead! And by the way, if you like these blurbs of gaming thoughts, you can find the previous ones here.
Another chance for Octopath Traveller?
With the sales in the Nintendo eShop still up, I was faced with a choice. So many people have mentioned Octopath Traveller in the past year to me. People who know my gaming preferences and told me this would be just my kind of game. I’d played the first demo a year ago and wasn’t impressed though. But with the games price 40% down I decided it couldn’t hurt to have another look.
I downloaded the current demo: three hours of gameplay that can be brought over to the full game if I should decide to buy it. This time I didn’t have to play as Oberic ( a character that didn’t click with me) but I chose Ophilia. A moving background story for this adopted clerics daughter!
So what are my first thoughts? Fellow gamers were right in saying this would be a game for me: I like the storyline and lots of texts don’t put me off. I like the battle system, it reminds me of Bravely Default. Not strange when the same developers were involved.
Not digging the retro look
However, a couple of things make me hesitant about parting with some €35: I don’t like the graphics. I know everyone is in love with the retro look, but come on: we’ve progressed beyond that. I do agree the landscapes and scenes look good. But the characters are so small and pixely. It’s alright for a indie game like Stardew Valley as it was really innovative in bringing new life to the farming sim genre. But in this case? I much more prefer the Bravely Default style.
My other reason for hesitation is that I can already predict this game will take a lot of grinding. Do I have time to really dive in and spend many hours to get my characters up to speed? I fear not….still, the storyline so far is compelling. I’ll play it a bit more before I decide, as I have one more week to decide.
Look at my awesome new scooter
Between Christmas and the New Year we holidayed in our favourite city away from home again: London. It’s a relatively short journey for us, the hotel is familiar and good and we are always in walking distance of the Tower Bridge. Taking the Tube into the city is a piece of cake, and it always feels so good to be in the hustle and bustle again. I took my Switch with me, planning to game a bit in the evenings. But as is often the case when I’m on holiday: gaming drops down on the list of things to do very quickly.Â
I did however decide to dive back into Animal Crossing Pocket Camp to see what new things the game had added since I left. The developers haven’t been sitting idle, that’s for sure. The workings of the game have been spruced up: you can skip converstations with animals.
A cabin is added for you to decorate and invite people into. The way the friend list works is better now, it’s easier to lend a hand to get in the quarry. So many new things, items to pursue, fortune cookies and whatnot. Maybe a bit too much content, if that’s possible. Still, I had fun with it in short bursts without spending any real money.
The fortune cookies were nice to me too: I got this swanky new Isabelle Scooter from a cookie I bought with bells. Isn’t it a beauty? I almost wish I could drive around on it in real life!
