Welcome to another YvoCaro Plays!
As always, these blurbs are mostly about the video games I’m currently playing. Unedited thoughts that spring up in my mind, mostly game related, sometimes not. Or a random train of thoughts starting with the game and ending somewhere completely different! This time I want to talk to you about another passion of mine, Star Trek.
If you like these bits of gaming thoughts you can find the previous ones here
The Kirk versus Picard Debate
Yes, I am a Trekkie as they say, have been for 50 years now. Not the kind of Trekkie that has an Uhuru outfit stowed away in her closet (wouldn’t fit my anymore anyway). But the kind of fan that can still enjoy watching the adventures in the Star Trek universe even after seeing them so, so many times already.

When you mention Star Trek to a non-trekkie, most of them have at least heard of Mister Spock. But if you are dealing with Trekkies, then the surest way of provoking an intense debate is to ask who they think is the best captain: Picard or Kirk. Is Kirk nothing more than a womanising brash case of brawn who jumps in before thinking? Or is Picard a bit weird, supposedly being a Frenchman with a British accent, too contemplative and forever seeking advice and thus being slow to jump into action?

Although I loved Picard in his role in the series Picard, playing a old retired captain, I am firmly in the Kirk camp. And particularly when he’s being portrayed by William Shatner. Of course, you don’t have to agree with me! But here’s what I wanted to tell you: this week The Voyage Home was aired once again, and once again I sat watching it as if it was all new to me (while I have the movie on DVD myself!).
The interaction between the characters, the friendship between Kirk, Spock and McCoy, the humour in that particular movie. The storyline, recognising the Earth as it was when I was 20 and the need to save the whales. The Voyage Home is easily my favourite of the Star Trek movies because of all that.

It’s Life Jim….
As is often the case with me, it made me think of my other passion, video games. Or, in this case, of my 3DS in the days when it still went with me everywhere I went. I was very eager to get it out there to pick up Streetpass hits. I traveled by train to my work daily, an hour each way, and I allowed myself to play games meanwhile.
Do you remember that you could set a custom greeting in Streetpass? Mine was: “It’s life Jim…”. Every Star Trek fan knows what follows and I was thrilled some days later to see the green light that I had a Streetpass hit. And got the correct answer back in a personal message: “…but not as we know it!” from a Mii called Martinus.

We had fun since after that first meeting. I gave him back: “Live long…”. You can guess what he answered right? “…and prosper” of course! It was time to step it up: I wrote back “Rura Pente”, after which it got quiet for some time. I was beginning to worry if he had found another job, or maybe he was ready with this studies and had moved on to bigger and better things. Finally we met again, he greeted me with “Qu’Plah”, which for the non-Star Trek fans, is Klingon for Success! And meeting up with a fellow gaming and Star Trek fan sure was a success for me!
