Welcome to another YvoCaro Plays! If you like these bits of gaming thoughts, you can find the previous ones here.
Ever since I found my love for video games relatively late in life, I haven’t been without at least one game grabbing my attention. But somehow, in times when I have most free time available for gaming, I never do. During holidays, my Switch (or 3DS/DS before that) always travels with me. And ends up being unused for those weeks.
Somehow, playing games on mobile is much easier during those times. I’m talking about the little games you can play anywhere and anytime, but also about games that earned our highest rating. Games that aren’t limited to gaming consoles but are also available in the AppStore or Google Play Store; some do need a Netflix membership.
We made a list last year with games that got Two Thumbs Up that could be your travel companion. Time for another list of 10 games, that got our highest rating in the past year! By the way, the list isn’t ranked,
Paper Trail
Paper Trail is a top-down puzzle adventure about leaving home, set in a foldable, paper world.
For this one, a Netflix membership is required!
Anni wrote her review for Paper Trail, saying:
Paper Trail is an absolutely enchanting game that is bursting at the seams with charm and whimsy. While the concept may not be entirely new, the gameplay and delightful characters truly steal the show in Paper Trail. The innovative use of origami to manipulate the environment and unlock hidden pathways is simply genius.
Boxes: Lost Fragments
As a legendary thief, your next assignment lures you into a grand and lavish mansion. There, you find a series of puzzle boxes designed for an unknown purpose. What should have been a quick in-and-out gradually turns into your own harrowing struggle for freedom and answers.
Paula reviewed the game and felt that if you like this kind of puzzle, this one is a must!
Overall, Boxes: Lost Fragments is a fantastic puzzler; the only complaint I have, which isn’t really a complaint, is that I wish the game was longer. I was disappointed to be finished with the game after six hours of gameplay. I enjoyed it very much.
Snowman Story
Very hot for you this Summer? Dive into the snow of Snowman Story. Bundle up and get cozy with this warm winter tale about one snowman’s journey to the North Pole. Can he make it there before spring arrives?
Paula wrote in her conclusion:
Snowman Story, with its tale of kindness, regret and the warmth of friendship mixed with a few puzzles, will melt your heart and is a great game to curl up with by the fire any winter holiday season.
Dream Town Island
A town sim where you raise generations of residents. Unlock new stores and facilities, help your residents find love, or cash in on the stock market!
Lynne loves her Kairosoft games and gave this one our highest rating. Here’s her conclusion:
Watching the cute pixelated characters go about their daily lives, falling in love and starting a family is delightful. There is a great balance in progressing through the game, playing mini-games, unlocking facilities and building your dream town.
Hidden Through Time 2: Myths & Magic
Join Clicky on a new, enchanted adventure in Hidden Through Time 2: Myths & Magic! Search for hidden objects scattered around hand-drawn worlds, and unlock more as you go. With both a single-player campaign and an online mode where you can create your own dream world, the adventure never ends!
Paula reviewed this game and wrote in her conclusion:
For new players and those players who enjoyed the first game, you will have as much fun, if not more, with Hidden Through Time 2: Myths & Magic. It feels like the developers have put their heart and soul into Hidden Through Time 2, and it’s a lot more challenging than the first game. For me, out of the two games, I think this one is the best.
My Little Universe
Stranded on a barren moon with nothing but your tools, fuelless ship, and celestial powers of creation, you are destined to recreate what was once lost and be the hero of your own Little Universe!
Paula made a review of the game, and wrote in her conclusion:
I’ve had a blast with My Little Universe; it is a cosy worldbuilding collect-a-thon. It urges the player to explore further and discover what is on the next hex. My Little Universe is a wholesome, relaxing game for those who want the thrill of exploring and collecting infinite resources. Suitable for all ages in the family, it also has a very addictive gameplay loop and watching Orangey go to work and swing his tools is brilliant; I wish I had his energy!
A Tiny Sticker Tale
A Tiny Sticker Tale is a cosy miniature adventure about changing the world using the power of stickers!
Lynne reviewed the game and even made a guide for it. This is her conclusion:
A Tiny Sticker Tale is one of the most adorable games I’ve played this year. The graphics are bold and colourful, removing and placing stickers is good fun, and the quests are satisfying. Designed to be a short adventure, A Tiny Sticker Tale packs a lot in and definitely a game to get stuck into!
Beecarbonize
Do you have what it takes to save the planet? Beecarbonize is an environmental card strategy game with climate change as your opponent.
When Mina reviewed it, she wrote in her conclusion:
The premise of Beecarbonize is very simple, clean, and thought-provoking. There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles in this game, but you can feel the amount of time and effort that went into every aspect of it. The sound design, clarity, and polish in each aspect of this game’s design are very well done. It’s really beautiful from a game design perspective; and it’s proof that games don’t have to be complex with state-of-the-art graphics and high budgets to be thoughtful and effective.
Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure
Find your way in a world of breezy, thoughtful puzzles along a charming journey of self-discovery.
For this one, a Netflix membership is required!
Paula reviewed the game and loved it. This is her conclusion:
Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure is a game focused on the core experience of exploration and puzzle-solving. It brings a refreshing twist to the RPG genre. Its innovative grid system, storytelling, and visuals make it a standout title for me on the Nintendo Switch.
The game’s unique approach to movement, exploration, and combat, combined with its story, ensures that it will leave a lasting impression on players. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or new to the genre, Arranger is an adventure worth embarking on.
Cassette Beasts (Coming October 7th 2024)
Collect awesome monsters to use during turn-based battles in this open-world RPG, now with online multiplayer mode. Combine any two monster forms using Cassette Beasts’ Fusion System to create unique and powerful new ones!
When we reviewed the game, this was our verdict, so it comes highly recommended!
Cassette Beasts is a fantastic game with plenty of charm, great gameplay, and a groovy soundtrack. The narrative aspects should keep a playthrough for about 8 – 18 hours, but those who wish to collect all the monsters and complete all side quests could expect to be playing for up to around 50 hours. There is plenty to do in New Wirral, take the leap of discovery and become a Cassette Beast Ranger!
