Fill The Void Demo Impressions

The dev wanted his game, Fill The Void, to be simple, addictive and satisfying. He succeeded. I had a great time sucking strange, zany items into a hole that I control.

The Premise of Fill The Void

I played as a sentient hole, trying to suck up as many items as I could. It’s a wild and absurd game, and I liked it a lot. There’s nothing deep or difficult about the game, just a really enjoyable romp!

The Gameplay of Fill The Void

Fill The Void does not provide a lot of instruction, but it was pretty easy to figure out what to do. In a nutshell, I hovered under things, and they got sucked into me! The more I advanced in the game, the larger I could make my hole. It’s a similar mechanic to other games, a mechanic which I enjoy.

The game is divided into levels which are timed. The first level was called the Butterfly Sanctuary but I guess it’s not really all that safe for butterflies! The level has what looks like a sandy surface with butterflies all over the place. They are very colorful, and some are even patterned with designs like checks or stripes.

As I wandered around the sanctuary, I found lots of different colored butterflies. I have 1 minute and 44 seconds left in this level.

I played with a controller, and when I pressed my right trigger, I grew larger. So I could suck in even more butterflies!! It was a lot of fun. As I sucked in each butterfly, there was a satisfying thud. Which is kind of silly because butterflies are so light, they would never thud. But it amused me.

I usually don’t like timed games, but Fill The Void was really enjoyable; I didn’t feel any pressure to succeed. Each level was short, I think only 2 minutes, so if I didn’t do well, it was no big deal to go back and repeat the level. I have to say, though, I did remarkably well with the levels. Each time I broke a previous record, so I patted myself on the back for that!

Another great feature of Fill The Void was that during the last 10 seconds of a level, there was the ticking of a timer. I appreciated that auditory warning because I was too immersed in the butterflies to keep track of the timer. After my time was up, I saw a screen telling me how I did; I was rated on mass (weight), points and total.

The Oddities in Fill The Void

There were some mighty amusing and bizarre things in the different levels. In the Butterfly Sanctuary level there were paper boats and starfish. Why would they be with butterflies? Starfish live in the ocean. I can’t explain it, but I like it!

After I progressed a bit in Fill The Void, another level opened up for me. This one was called Coconut Orchard, and it had some new challenges. In Coconut Orchard, some areas could not be reached right away. I learned that as I increase my rank, I’ll be able to purchase abilities such as jumping higher. I didn’t advance far enough in the demo to test that out, though. No worries, one day I’ll get there.

I will also be able to purchase costumes with different colors and patterns as I progress. Just for fun! (A costume for a hole!) For the demo, I preferred to use a white hole for contrast, but there are many other options.

I ended up choosing white because it gave a better contrast. But I’ll bet the game would be more challenging if I chose sand!

There were plenty of oddities in the Coconut Orchard level too! I could see fish and birds right next to each other. Were the fish in the sky or the birds in the water? This level had some new things for me to attempt too. I was able to make myself into a bouncing ball so I could reach a little higher. I found a bunch of tropical trees, bananas, a fence and a lot of white balls, which I think were pearls. I sucked them all into my hole! Many of these items were heavy, so they increased my mass score and allowed me to progress.

Sucking down the fence was really fun. It went in sections.

Fill The Void is a Collectathon Too

The game kept track of what I’d collected and how many of each item. There’s a lot of items I still need to collect!

I’ve collected 13 out of 172 items!!

The Level Select Screen in Fill The Void is Very Clever

In order to select a level or activity, such as upgrading an ability, I sucked the marker into the hole! Fill The Void really is interesting; it’s similar enough to other games of this genre, so it feels familiar and comfortable. And yet, it’s different enough that it feels brand new. That’s quite an accomplishment

On this screen, I can choose between a costume change, gallery or total mass. To make my choice, I suck the appropriate icon into my big hole!

Final Thoughts

I had some questions about the gameplay, so I reached out to the dev on Reddit. He replied quickly and was very helpful. I’m always impressed with game devs who are very responsive to players. To me, it indicates that they are committed to developing an excellent game and want to make sure the players have the best possible experience with it. So Bravo to Morph, the game dev for Fill The Void. He is a solo dev and is releasing a staggering 5 games this year as he launches his own indie studio. I wish him all the best.

The demo for Fill The Void lasted about 30 minutes. When it was over, I went back and played it again! It’s really a joy to play. It’s available on Steam; the full game will be released September 8, 2026.
