Indie World December Highlights

Recently Nintendo showcased some more indie games coming to Nintendo Switch. Many of which were are entirely new games. Instead of summarizing the whole thing which you can watch below, I’ve decided to highlight games of interest.

New Games!

Golf Story was an early Nintendo Switch title that took 2D golf gameplay and made it a story based adventure. It scored pretty high on reviews and has apparently sold well enough since a new sequel has just been shown. This one is called Sports Story and features golf mixed with some tennis, volleyball and soccer as well this time. Sports Story is set for a mid 2020 released date.

Gleamlight is an action platformer game with no user interface or text. With the aim of being though provoking and designed in a way that gamers can play it intuitively. It features a gorgeous stained art style (which reminds me of Little Briar Rose). This game will arrive in early 2020.

The craze of local co-op games on the Switch continues following the likes Overcooked 2 and Tools Up! Bake ‘n’ Switch seems to follow a cooking theme but you need to engage in combat to turn these doughy enemies into worthy sacrifices. It comes out in Summer of next year and will also have a competitive mode.

In Mash Up! you pick  two genres to mash and the game will create a game within itself based on those two genres. You can share the games that have been made  with others. Completing these games will give you cards to help you in other games. There also appears to be a small amount of store management, but creating ideal games for your customers. It will release in May 2020.

Streets and Skates

Streets of Rage 4 was already announced for the Nintendo Switch but we got a new trailer showing one of the original cast as a playable character. This series hasn’t had a release since 1994 but the new art style is looking amazing. As someone who got to review a couple of beat-em-up games (like Castle Crashers) with co-op this year (and like River City Girls), I’m looking forward to this game’s release in the first half of 2020.

I’ve seen a smidge about Skatebird but now we have confirmation of a Switch release in late 2020 and some footage.  Skatebird is a skateboarding game which is a genre that’s been lacking recently. Game play seems to be that of a typical skating game but, you are a tiny bird. It seems that there’s one body type for the birds but different patterns from other species. This game looks very adorable, hopefully it will be fun on top of that.

Yvonne’s Highlights

Thanks Paige for your highlights! I going to add two of my own too: The Survivalists and Murder by Numbers. The Switch is slowly but surely building a good library of simulation games. Seems like Stardew Valley opened the gates for a sim kinda game in retro style: Team 17 announced The Survivalists: you find yourself on an island that will change with day/night cycles as you explore and uncover its secrets. Hunt (or be hunted by!) animals for food and meet the local inhabitants, who aren’t necessarily pleased to see you. Get quests from a Mysterious Stranger or find them washed up on the shore. Prepare to trek into the wilderness, with a variety of biomes, for an adventure that’s unique to every player. You can even play with friends to gain loot, trade and ultimately survive together and as you and up to three fellow castaways explore an island paradise.

Another game that caught my attention is Murder by Numbers. A murder mystery with a difference: Los Angeles, 1996. Honor Mizrahi was just an actress on a hit TV detective show. But when her boss ends up dead just minutes after he fires her, she finds herself starring in her own murder mystery. Teaming up with SCOUT, a reconnaissance robot thrown away after a mysterious incident, she sets out to clear her name – and a new detective duo is born.

You have to solve number puzzles to gather clues and interrogate your witnesses with it, slowly working your way to the truth! The game is expected early in 2020.

Your Highlights

Were any of these games of interest to you and now on your radar for next year? What about ones that were in the presentation that I didn’t highlight?
