Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy is another addition to the successful puzzle platformer game series Trine, developed by Frozenbyte and released by THQ Nordic in 2023. Our reviews for the previous games—Trine 1, Trine 2, Trine 3, and Trine 4—can be found here.
The Premise of Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy
In Trine 5, we once again step into the shoes of the familiar trio-Amadeus the Wizard, Zoya the Thief, and Pontius the Knight. They are called to arms to protect the kingdom from the terrifying Clockwork army, a new threat in the world of Trine.
Gameplay
Trine 5 is yet another puzzle platformer with some light battles on the side. It follows the classic formula of Trine—introductory chapters for each character, followed by a story divided into chapters, where we can play with any character and switch between them as needed.
Trine 5 offers a single and multiplayer mode, catering to different play styles. The multiplayer mode allows us to play in local co-op or online, and the game intelligently adapts to the number of players, adjusting the difficulty to ensure a balanced and enjoyable experience for all.
As in other games in the series, collecting green bottles allows us to upgrade the skill of our characters. Speaking of skills – returning is one of the classic abilities of Zoya, Pontius, and Amadeus. Zoya can shoot arrows and use a rappelling rope and hook to connect to things and even create bridges. Pontius is the primary fighter who fights with a sword, shield, and, later on, a hammer. Amadeus can conjure a box or a sphere.
As we progress, the game introduces a variety of new skills and abilities, adding depth and excitement to the gameplay. Zoya gains a range of arrows, Pontius can use his shield in new ways, and Amadeus expands his conjuring abilities beyond just boxes and spheres.
While none of the puzzles or fighting were complicated, the game is still engaging enough. Coupled with the gorgeous world and the characters, Trine 5 is my favorite game of the series.
In terms of world-building, as with previous games, Trine 5 offers tantalizing details about our heroes’ private lives. It also allows us to explore new locations unseen in previous games, fleshing out more of the world of Trine.
Some Other Things
Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy has Steam achievements and trading cards. It also has extensive settings for audio, language support, controls, including remappable controls, gameplay, and user interface, with accessibility and visual settings.
We also have several difficulty options—easy, normal, and hard—and a custom option where we can adjust the difficulty of each of the game’s components—puzzles, combat, and character resurrection.
We can also adjust the appearance of the characters with different color schemes and some new accessories. This is very helpful if you try multiplayer mode with several players who choose the same character.
Conclusion
Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy is another fun addition to an already great series of games. The characters and the world of Trine are familiar, yet they always find new ways to engage us, and I hope we see more from the world of Trine.
Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up:
