YvoCaro Plays: Celebrating Beloved Game Series

Welcome to another YvoCaro Plays!

At LadiesGamers.com we keep you informed about indie gaming with our reviews and our news. But did you know we also write articles that are mostly game-related but might be a bit older? Still relevant though. So this time, I wanted to take you to some of the series of articles that could do with some TLC.

So pull up a chair, grab a warm drink, and join us as we revisit the game series that have a special place in our hearts. From quiet Animal Crossing moments to epic Zelda adventures, and the soundtracks that play in the background of our memories. This first one is about our writers’ and guest writers’ earliest memories in gaming in a series called Memory Museum.

Saracen, Joe & Mac and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Some years ago, several of our writers wrote about their earliest gaming memories to the backdrop of what was happening in their personal life and what was happening in the world back then! The first one to take the plunge was Elena. Growing up as the youngest sibling she came in contact with a game Saracen II in 1987. Her older siblings had already left the family home to live independently, but when they came for a visit, she had fond memories of sitting in on their gaming adventures with King Saracen.

Serena wrote about Joe & Mac, the first game she played in 1982. Joe & Mac is a prehistoric-themed platformer originally released in 1991. It was initially an arcade game but was later ported over to SNES, NES, Game Boy, and lastly the Sega Genesis. Serena played the SNES version and it still stands out as one of her favorites from that era.

Paige’s first gaming memories are of times spent watching others play even before she could comprehend games. But she thinks the first game she ever played might have been The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Animal Crossing Wild World, Yoshi’s Safari and Super Smash Bros

Not exactly the earliest memories, but Paula talks about Animal Crossing Wild World, a game she played at a defining moment in her life in 2006. She went through some serious health issues at the time, and Animal Crossing Wild World was a big part in helping her cope. Plus, she found some great friends!

And in 1993 Brandi gets a Super Scope peripheral to play a very special game called Yoshi’s Safari. The Super Scope was basically a light gun peripheral that you rested on your shoulder. You aimed at the TV and looked through the scope of the gun, and that was how you played! And what a surprise when she came home unexpectedly from a sleepover at a friend’s house!

Ben played game from as early as he can remember, but the defining series for his gaming passing is Super Smash Bros. Melee. It marked the beginning of a lifelong of playing video games.

Dizzy and Scrooge McDuck, Pac Man and Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunter

In 1994, in Wales, little Tim watched his brothers play on their NES when he was three years old. He could finally dive into Dizzy and Scrooge McDuck himself even if he didn’t get much playtime on the console to begin with!

Jonah’s family owned the Atari 2600 and he had the pleasure of playing a whole range of Atari 2600 games. Two titles, in particular, stand out due to their infamous reputation: Pac-Man and E.T. The games themselves were terrible, but he didn’t care, he loved them.

Emily started playing on her dad’s SNES as a young girl and remembers the Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunter combo cartridge. Though at 9 years old she wasn’t very good at it, it still made an impression.

Creating a Game, Mattel’s Auto Race game and Super Mario Bros. 3

James tells us about the year 2011 when he created his own video game, learning from an online Game Design Module and working on it on his long commutes to his actual work. The story of how this came to be is not often told, so be sure to read it!

We shared the memory stage with some loyal readers too, when they wrote their guest posts. Mitch, one of our patrons, shared how handheld gaming was very simple back when he was a kid. And how back then, a handheld game was tied to the hardware – like Nintendo’s Game & Watch. One of the first he enjoyed was Mattel’s Auto Race game.

Matt, from Nintendobound, also wrote about his earliest memories that came from playing on the Brazilian clone of the NES system, called the Phantom System and the game Super Mario Bros. 3. After that first encounter, his parents gave him an actual Nintendo console, which started his growing up on a steady Nintendo Diet!
