YvoCaro Plays: tying my fingers in a knot

Time to sit down for another YvoCaro Plays. As always, these blurbs are mostly about the video games I’m currently playing. Unedited thoughts that spring up in my mind, mostly game related. And sometimes a random train of thoughts starting with the game and ending somewhere completely different!

If you like these bits of gaming thoughts you can find the previous ones here

Chosing difficulty setting

As you might have guessed with my enthusiastic writings last week, a.k.a. Ni no Kuni (Switch) very first impressions, I have been playing Ni no Kuni on my Switch. Sadly, work has been crazy busy as usual all week, so I didn’t get as much gameplay in as I wanted to. Still, I’m enjoying it.

Remember how I wrote that you can choose between playing the game on easy setting or normal difficulty? The game states that Easy enables you to focus more on the storyline.

Ha, what are you suggesting, Ni no Kuni? That I wouldn’t be able to win any battles on normal difficulty? I’ve been gaming since even before you originally released in Japan. Hardcore gaming mama here! Of course I’ll chose Normal!

Ahhmmmm……several hours later into the game. Why is this game so hard? I have died several times, and have been sent back to the last save point. Sure, you can donate some of your hard earned cash to keep a hold of your stat changes, but you’re still sent back to the save point. So no thanks, back to the title screen it is for me.

And, after 55 years living as me, I know what will happen next: I’ll eventually chuck the game aside in frustration. So, dare I admit? When no one was looking, I went to settings and switched to easy….sssht, don’t tell anyone!

Fingers in a knot

You know what my problem is with Ni no Kuni on the Switch? The fighting is entirely controlled by the left JoyCon. And it’s not as turn-based as I seem to remember from the DS game. So it comes down to being quick and sending the right familiar in. Or firing the right spell. And I’m never very good at thinking fast on my feet in fighting games.

You have to move around on the battle field with the left thumb-stick, choose which familiar to send out or retreat with the left shoulder button, choose attack/spells/defence/provisions with the left directional pad too. If only I could move around on the battlefield with the right thumb-stick, that would make it so much easier!

Not that I’m making excuses for my poor fighting skills, haha.

Sweet touches in Ni no Kuni

On another note: have you noticed the awesome touches the devs have added to this game? When you’re in a video segment, try to look behind Oliver at what’s happening. For instance, I saw Drippy trying on a ladies hat in the background just now, almost tripping over it.

And when you give your familiars treats in the Creature Cage, they are so overly adorable. Like my Seymour, who puts aside her staff for a brief moment to grab the sherbet I gave her. So sweet!

I think I’m gonna end this article, and go back to my game!
