Luigi's Mansion

Game Soundtracks We Love: Luigi’s Mansion

Hello to everyone! Thank you for joining us, on our cuppa filled gaming journey.

Last week we chose a game where the music changed every hour of the day/night: Animal Crossing (Gamecube). If you missed it and want to check it out: Game Soundtracks We Love: Animal Crossing (GC)

With it being Halloween at the end of this month; it seemed like the best time to have soundtracks from games that contain: the supernatural, the obscure, the insane and the undead.

Game of Choice

To start off the Halloween line-up, we chose a game that has a remake being released (on 3DS) later this month: Luigi’s Mansion.

In Luigi’s Mansion; Mario has been kidnapped and trapped in a picture frame, Luigi takes up the art of vacuum cleaning (as you do when your bro is in trouble) and it’s set in a mansion filled with ghosts, with the only help available; a mad professor and a team of Toads – no problem!…

If you haven’t played the game or know much about it; check out the trailer for the 3DS remake of the game (below), to find out more.

Note: The 3DS remake is being released October 12th in the US, 19th in UK & EU.

The trailer uses the game’s main theme; it has elements that have a spooky sound, but it also makes you suspicious/curious about what may happen next – great for investigating the kidnapping of Mario! As an added bonus; Luigi is humming along to the track – brilliant! 😀

Of course not all the ghosts are happy with you entering the mansion and snooping around the rooms; the track for when Luigi is in danger is short but plays on a loop in the game. It has an edgy and rather manic sound that just sounds so off putting; certainly makes you want to get the situation in hand quickly or get out of their as soon as possible!

The track that plays while viewing the game’s controls, is quiet with a beat; very simplistic. However, Kazumi Totaka (the game’s composer) likes to include his tune in games he composes for; his tune begins to play after waiting on the control screen for more than 3 minutes (it starts at 3:06 in the video above). These days a lot of people know about it, but if you unintentionally came across it while playing Luigi’s Mansion; it was one of those great moments of discovery – it didn’t have any significance in game, but it’s fun to find hidden elements in games.  😀

Final Thoughts

The tracks add a nice amount of edgy/spooky feeling to the game, while most are funky enough to keep it from feeling too creepy or serious – perfect for keeping it family friendly.

I’m not sure how many games have the main character humming or singing the main theme for the game, but I’ve always loved that about the Luigi’s Mansion main theme  – I think it’s brilliant and adds a nice,  lighthearted (and slightly humorous) element to the track. 😀

A few questions for you:

  • Do you like Luigi humming along to the main theme?
  • Did you know about Kazumi Totaka’s tune in Luigi’s Mansion?
  • Will you be buying the 3DS remake of Luigi’s Mansion?

Would love to read your thoughts 😀 – Thanks for reading!
