Wow, ten years is a long time for a gaming website to be running, and it all started with one middle-aged woman, Yvonne, when she first got into gaming and wanted to jot down her thoughts about her journey.
I’ve known Yvonne since we first met about 18 years ago or so on an online forum, Animal Crossing Community for Animal Crossing Wild World and later New Leaf. We were both heavily involved in playing the game and enjoyed talking to other players, and we had both joined an over-40s older ladies’ group on Animal Crossing Community Forum.
How My Journey with LadiesGamers Began
I’ve followed LadiesGamers since Yvonne started writing about her gaming thoughts. However, my journey with LadiesGamers began when Yvonne asked me if I would like to write some reviews. At first, I thought she was kidding, but she wasn’t. I’ve certainly played many games, as I’ve been gaming since the late 1970s; I’ve also read many reviews on other sites, including LadiesGamers. However, actually writing about them was something that never crossed my mind, and I’d never thought of putting pen to paper and jotting my thoughts down.
Anyway, I agreed to give it a go, and that was how my very first review was published in August of 2018 on LadiesGamers for Spectrum, a Nintendo Switch game.
Since Yvonne started LadiesGamers, the site has progressed in leaps and bounds and gained a steady reader base that continues to visit the site regularly; thank you, dear readers, for your continued support.
A Growing Site Needs Extra Hands
Later, when the COVID-19 pandemic took over the world, LadiesGamers had grown so much that it was too much for one person to manage on their own as well as have a full-time job. Yvonne suggested I lend a hand with the running of the site, and I agreed, so here we are, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of LadiesGamers.
Now, my days are filled with contacting our Publisher base for review codes, as without them, we would not have games to review (thank you!). I also edit articles and reviews from our wonderful team of writers, play and review games myself, and write the monthly Paula’s Games Ramblings. I also write editorials about games and many other topics that involve gaming. And, of course, I help Yvonne manage a busy website.
Who knew there was so much going on behind the scenes of a website? I certainly didn’t before I got involved with the work of keeping LadiesGamers going; I had yet to learn what it all entailed, and it is a lot, but it is also a lot of fun sharing the load and keeping baby, as Yvonne and I lovingly call the site, going.
Playing and Reviewing Games and Writing Guides
In my time playing and reviewing games for LadiesGamers, I have reviewed some brilliant games and some not-so-good games. Throughout the years that LadiesGamers has been online and the time I’ve spent reviewing games, we have covered many indie games since that is what we specialise in to give the smaller developers a voice.
After 700 and some articles published on LadiesGamers in my name, I’m having a hard time choosing my favourite game, as you can imagine. However, I do have some favourite games released in the last decade. They have been indie games as well as triple-A games, such as Animal Crossing New Horizons and Happy Home Paradise DLC and, of course, anything with Zelda in the name. For instance, we have had the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and, more recently, Tears of the Kingdom.
For indie games that I have played or reviewed, there are the ever-popular games such as Cities: Skylines and my all-time favourite strategy game, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI; the Civilization game was also the first game I wrote guides for. I love writing game guides, though you have to really love the game you are writing about to write a comprehensive guide on it.
Anything with Steamworld in the title is usually a great game to play; I have reviewed quite a few Steamworld games. Down in Bermuda was a neat little puzzle game that I enjoyed reviewing and one that stayed in my memory. At the end of 2023, I reviewed and loved A Highland Song, and more recently, I’ve been engrossed in Millennia and writing a guide for it, too.
A Massive Thank You
With all of this, though, LadiesGamers would not exist if it wasn’t for Yvonne getting interested in gaming. So thank you, my dear friend, for inviting me along and for your friendship; what fun we have together with LadiesGamers; I’ve enjoyed every minute of it all.
A massive thanks to our wonderful publishers and developers whom we work with and who have given us their continued support, such as Stride PR, Forever Entertainment, Future Friends Games, and PR Hound and developers like Mens Sana Interactive, to name just a few out of many.
Additionally, it would be much less fun to be a part of LadiesGamers if it wasn’t for our brilliant team of writers. Yvonne and I can’t review every game we get a review code for, so we would be lost without our team.
So this is my opportunity to thank all our past writers for giving LadiesGamers their time and also to thank our current brilliant writers, James, Mina, Kalina, Lynne, Valerie and Margaret, for all their hard work in helping us keep baby fed through the years. And last but by no means least, thank you to all our readers, be they regular readers or just passing through.
So cling your drinking glasses together and raise them in a toast to another ten years of LadiesGamers!
