LadiesGamers Handheld Game of the Year 2018

It’s the last day of 2018 and time to look at the results of this years Handheld Game of the Year. For a couple of weeks I’ve been pestering you to make your choice when it comes to your favorites. Difficult this year, as there are so, so many games to choose from. Because of this, the votes are very wide spread, and the top 3 didn’t even get an impressive amount of voted.

Which were the games you loved playing most on a handheld device? These are the results:

  1. Pokémon Let’s Go (11% of the votes)
  2. Octopath Traveler (6% of the votes)
  3. Super Smash Bros Ultimate (5% of the votes)

Looking at the number of votes, Pokémon is a very clear winner! ( find the overall results here.)

Readers input on the Poll

I asked a few readers who have been with the site for a long time for their input. You’ve already seen Jason’s and Serena’s choices, in their guest articles. (Jason’s is here, Serena’s is here) . But Mary, Max, Kelly, Nadia, Sparky and Stephen also gave me their choices with the reasoning behind it.

Mary told me all her favorites are on the Nintendo Switch which she seems to play more than her PS4. “My first choice would be Octopath Traveler even though the graphics are kinda old, the old school RPG style is so fun. My second choice is Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee. I’ve never really gotten into any of the other Pokemon games before but this one is great fun. My third choice is the Diablo 3 Eternal collection. I just love RPG.

Sparky mentioned that in the second half of the year she started playing more PC games (after she got a PC in July). She hardly touches the Switch anymore; the excessive coverage of Super Smash Bros at the E3 and the introduction of the paid online service made her loose interest. She did enjoy the games Don’t Starve, Smoke and Sacrifice and Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee.

Stephen has chosen Octopath Traveler as his number 1, with Pokémon Let’s Go on second and Civilization VI as his third choice. He does face a bit of a backlog problem though, collecting more Switch games then he can even play!

Nadia hasn’t played a lot on handheld devices. She did play Stardew on her Vita, and some games on her 3DS. These make up her top 3: the first is Yokai Watch Busters, an action RPG that she has put in a lot of hours to befriend the new YoKai. Her second game is Detective Pikachu: she loves the adventure game that is in the style of Quantic Dream, and she really hopes there will be a second part.  Her final choice is Radiant Historia, a great old fashioned RPG.

Max’s most favorite game is Fortnite. “I have played this game every day since it came out for Switch. I have a couple of friends that I play with which makes it much more interesting. My second choice is Dragalia Lost. Took me a while to really get into this one but I play it every day now. I love the art style, everyone is so cute!  The game I’m most looking forward to is Katamari Damacy Reroll. I’ve only played the demo so far but I’m getting the game for Christmas and I know I’ll be playing it every day. I didn’t buy very many games this year. Either because Fortnite takes up so much time or because there wasn’t much released that I was interested in.”

Kelly’s absolute favorite at this moment is YoKai Watch 3, which was released in Europe a couple of weeks ago but has yet to make it to store in America. “YoKai Watch 3 is an entirely new adventure, where the interesting story takes place in two cities. Aside from Nate and Hailey you’ll meet X-Files actors Folly (Skully) and Blunder (Mulder). What makes it extra interesting is the Kainet ( a sort of social media for YoKai) where you’ll get your side quests.”

Thanks to all of you who voted, and hopefully we will have as many amazing games to choose from in 2019 too!

  1. Nice top 3!
I don’t like the Smash Bros game (or fight games in general), but the other 2 are definitely ‘up my alley’ to!
I just won my first Civilization 6 game! A cultural victory with the Australians. And it ‘only’ took me around 300 turns!
Having much fun discovering and learning.
Have a nice ‘Turn of the Year’ everyone!

      1. I don’t care for fireworks at all.
We have 2 cats and 1 of them was so afraid she urinated in the kitchen and pooped on the carpet.
It’s so frustrating you can’t do anything about it. You can’t make it less scary or noisy and you can’t explain it’s just a couple of hours and she is not in danger.
We didn’t do oliebollen/ anything to eat either. The day before was my birthday and the day after the birthday of my nice, so we had to have a ‘eat normal day’ in between.
As far as holiday’s go, I like this one the least.
