I played the demo of Unpetrified Echoes of Nature, and the demo is available on Steam. The full game will be released on November 11, 2025. I played on a PC with a controller.
My Initial Thoughts on Unpetrified Echoes of Nature
I was thrilled to be able to play the new expanded demo of the game Unpetrified Echoes of Nature by Dreamhunt Studio. They are a 10-person indie studio based in Switzerland. I played the original version of the demo earlier this year and really liked it a lot, so I was very happy to be able to play even more of it! This game has been self-described as a single-player, narrative-driven adventure
LadiesGamers has already written two articles about this game. In March of 2023, Paula wrote about the Kickstarter campaign for the game. In it, she reported that the game was about emotions and was inspired by Rime and A Short Hike. In April of 2025, Yvonne interviewed Dominik Gygax, one of the studio founders. You could say we’ve been tracking this game here at LadiesGamers!
The Lore and the Golem
A brief description of the lore is that a stone Golem and a Fox are on an emotional journey to restore nature. As they do, they discover secrets and memories from a lost civilization. I play as the Golem.
At the very beginning of the demo, I watched the Golem being created from a pile of rocks by a magical blue butterfly. I am absolutely stunned at the level of personality and emotions the devs were able to produce from these rocks. Between his eye movements and his body postures, this Golem expresses how he feels perfectly. Although there is text to explain the various game mechanics, the story itself has no text. It doesn’t need it; the Golem and the environment tell us all we need to know.

The Gameplay
The game is a semi-open world. There are multiple paths that I could take, and I could go back to a previous path if I wanted to. But to progress in the game, there are certain paths I must take. The environment is immersive and beautiful. As I walked along the paths, I encountered a variety of stunning plants and animals. I could use a power called an aura impulse ability to interact with the animals and some plants. Through these interactions, I can learn about the world’s past (expressed as memories), expand the storyline and also recover energy. I can view my energy level by looking at the blue design on my back. When it’s full, I have 100% energy.
The world is also full of puzzles, which I solve using my aura impulse ability. In my travels, I ran into stone pillars with a blue light on the top. By using my aura impulse ability, I can light up various pathways, which open new areas. The puzzles are not terribly difficult (which suits me fine!), but it’s a nice challenge and a lot of fun. Every time I use my aura impulse ability, there’s a very soothing and pleasant sound, I believe it’s chimes. Wonderful! However, using my aura impulse ability also causes me to lose energy, so I need to continue interacting with animals and plants to recover it. Even if I should run out completely, it’s not too terrible. I simply can’t use the ability again until I restore. Such a chill game!

There is no day-night cycle, and no need for sleep or food. You cannot die or get hurt in the game. There are beautiful scenic outlooks which you cannot fall from. Very nice! The game autosaves, which I find really helpful, and I can also save manually whenever I want. So I can play for as much time as I want, 10 minutes or 10 hours! I can also zoom in on the plants and animals I discover to look at them in more detail. They really are precious! I also want to mention that the butterfly, the Golem’s eyes, his energy meter and the blue in the puzzles are all the same shade. It’s a soothing color.
The Golem was created by a magical blue butterfly that embodies the energy of nature. Therefore, butterflies play a big part in the game. There is a mechanic I used called the regional compass. When I enable it, I can see colored butterflies and white ones.

The colored butterflies are recovered memories of the lost civilization. The white butterflies are memories that still need to be recovered, and the compass points me in the direction I need to explore next. The Golem’s back is an indicator of how many memories I have recovered. The more I recover, the more flowers I grow on my back. It’s a beautiful visual signal.
But Wait…There’s More!
During the demo, I entered Unpetrified Echoes of Nature’s second biome, the Verdant Forest. It’s lush and green. In the background, I could hear quiet soothing ambient music and lots of beautiful bird calls. I felt like I was in a forest for real! In other parts of the game, the music is much more pronounced.
Just when I was starting to become impatient with the time it takes my Golem to walk somewhere, I was given the ability to turn into a rolling rock ball. That allowed me to really speed up to where I want to go. I found it useful in some instances, but in others, I really wanted to move slowly and enjoy the atmosphere. It’s great to have the option, though. In addition, as a rolling rock ball, I can knock down things that I otherwise could not. It’s a useful skill!
During my travels, I discovered that when I use the aura impulse ability on some things, shapes appear on top of them in blue lights. In the demo, I saw a star, a crescent moon and a circle. I wonder what they will signify in the full game.
There are many paths to choose from, and sometimes I couldn’t decide which to take. Fortunately, I could press a button and my friendly blue butterfly appears again to guide me towards my next objective. What a great game feature!
In the forest, the Golem rescued a bird who was stuck in a tree, and they developed a relationship. The Golem saw him later, and when the bird spotted him, he was so excited that he began flying in dangerous patterns, not looking where he was going. He flew right into another tree. He lay on the ground, eyes closed but breathing. In a cut scene, the Golem picked him up very carefully and placed him on his shoulder to keep him safe. What was absolutely amazing to me about this was that after this happened, the Golem’s eyes and energy meter turned from beautiful blue to purple. I could see the sadness pouring out of him – and he’s made of rocks!! Stunning.
The game developers told me that even after Unpetrified Echoes of Nature has been released, they will keep the demo on Steam and will also keep it updated. I totally appreciate that!
I highly encourage you to try it. I probably spent 2 hours on the demo, but then, I play really slowly. The full game is projected to give 7-8 hours of gameplay. That would be 7-8 hours of pure happiness for me! You can find the Steam page for Unpetrified Echoes of Nature here, where you can Wishlist the game or even try out the demo for yourself.

Oh wow, this looks so beautiful! I’m such a sucker for emotional games and this one really seems to have that gentle, heartfelt vibe I love. The fox already stole my heart, looks like it plays a big part in how you move forward too?
Hi Emma, thanks for reading!
Yes, I’d think so as the games’ description says: an unlikely friendship between a stone Golem and an adorable Fox. But of course, we haven’t played the entire game yet either!
I backed this one on Kickstarter and have been enjoying all of the updates along the way. I didn’t get a chance to play the demo (crazy personal schedule), but I’m really looking forward to seeing it release! There is a lot of heart in this one.
It’s really a sweet game. It’s nice that you have been a long time backer. I’m sure you’ll love it when it releases.
