Kickstarter Scout’s Honour: earn a patch!

At times I feel a Kickstarter initiative needs a little extra TLC. After all, these days indie developers find their way to the Nintendo Switch easily. And even though most Kickstarter games start out as games on Steam, that doesn’t mean they won’t eventually make it to our favourite handheld device.

So, today, I want to mention Scout’s Honour: a fairly small initiative. But you never know, it might grow out to something big!

Scout’s Honour

The developers describe Scout’s Honour as a 3D sandbox adventure focused around narrative experiences.

“You’ve managed to not collect any patches during your time at Camp Evolent, so it’s a race against the clock. Will you spend your time collecting patches, or lazing around?

Get to know your fellow Scouts. Or not. Explore the surrounding environment. Light stuff on fire. Uncover a malicious camp secret. Every action counts, so get patching or get packing! ”

With that in mind, you are free to play the game as you see fit. Get to know your fellow Scouts. Or not. Explore the surrounding environment. Light stuff on fire. Uncover a malicious camp secret. Every action counts.

The game includes crafting to help you during your adventure. Of course, being a narrative experience, dialogue and spending time with your fellow campers is important. Exploration and questing are key: earn patches by doing favours for people. Your day in camp will have different activities depending on the time of day, so I think there will be a day and night cycle.

Team Anxious Campers

This project started out as a student project, and as should be, the developers are passionate about it. So much so, that they want to bring it a step further even after graduation. That means they have to find the time and resources to bring it to life. With the Kickstarter funding, they want to polish the gameplay and add additional mechanics. It’ll give them the funding to hire additional help if needed, and add additional models, environments and character designs.

Team Anxious Campers consists of four people: Cessia Castillo, the Environment Artist, Dana Lee, who is the programmer, Tom Pinto is the Narrative Designer and Stijn van Wakeren is the Composer.

If you want to check out the Kickstarter campaign, you can find the link here.

The campaign runs for only 5 more days, and ends April 17 (1:05 AM CEST). So far, at the moment of writing this, € 2.687 has been funded by 111 backers (including me). The funding goal has been reached, as it was only € 886. So it’s a huge success. They estimate to release the first results on Steam in June 2019, in early access.

It will be interesting to see how this team fares in future with Scout’s Honour.

  1. I always have trouble checking for what platform a video game is on Kickstarter.
I didn’t read you’re article very well, because I liked the pictures and immediately checked out the KS page.
I wish that would be the first thing all KS video game campaigns would mention. Isn’t it the most important piece of info to give backers?
There are soooo many KS campaigns to check out, I don’t want to read the entire page to figure out for what platform it is/ if it is even on the Switch. It’s irritating.

  2. I think that most kickstarters will start out for Steam. Only the most ambitious ones mention the consoles from the first. But I think for many indie developers it’s phase 2 of their project. That’s why I sometimes support ones that don’t mention the Switch yet. They might still release on the platform in the future. But, a good tip: if I write up one I’ll mention it specifically.
